the only bad thing about moly that I have heard is it doesn't tend to "dissolve" as well as Vaseline or lithium and/or synthetic based greases. As such it has a tendency to get caught up in oil passages more often. And well we don't want that.

 

sta-lube is cheaper lol.

 

Just to be clear, I am stealing info from this thread & others & want to be 100% sure I understand. You are going to pack the inside of the oil pump with the sta-lube marine grease almost like you would a wheel bearing correct. As much as you can get in between the 2 gears, no such thing as too much grease right?

 

Pretty much the idea of it. Then as it slings that thick stuff out it's going to pull oil up and get things all slippy like.

that's correct, rod, mains, oil pump, cam etc, there is no such thing as too much grease, however, now that I think about it, another drawback with moly based greases, which I have seen mainly in v8 motors, is that if "too much" moly grease is used on rebuild, it can make it real tough to turn the engine by hand.

Nice pics. I envy your pressure washer. One would have been great for cleaning the block, oil pan and other parts during my rebuild.

Here's something I haven't tried, but will test soon, a simple poor man's soda blaster setup for light cleaning: http://www.aircooledtech.com/tools-o.../soda_blaster/. All you need is an air compressor, some tubing and ordinary baking soda.


I think the mystery bolt in your oil pan may be from the timing chain tensioner. The only pic I have:



That, or maybe the "hidden" timing cover bolt on top by the cam gear?


Toyota thew a hissy fit about copyright nonsense and made them remove the diagrams. We should tell Toyota how we feel about that.

Toyotapartszone has diagrams, but they annoyingly leave off a couple digits of the part numbers. So, I ended up looking at the diagrams there to find what the part is called, then finding it at toyodiy to get the full number. Then looking it up at 1stpartstoyota because they seemed to usually have the lowest prices.

Earlier you mentioned possibly buying 2 tubes of FIPG. I used about half a tube on my oil pan, applied pretty much as the manual says. After doing the pan and the half moons in the head, here is how much I have left:

Boy, losing an hour of sleep sucks.

 

Good Morning.............

going to try my hand at using the torque wrench today.....want to put the bolts back on the steering linkage and follow the torque spec in the FSM.

Probably going to clean up the front of the block today, removing the old tensioner and rails and scrape and clean it up.

Going to go to look for clear engine paint and give the pan a coating and probably paint the timing cover.

Also have to clean up the garage a little.....

Maybe try my hand with that tap for the head bolt holes...
