Try the new cap and burp the system. Not sure how you burp your system as I have heard there are a couple of different way, but here is how I burp mine with the cap off and let run for about 15 minutes and always works great for me. It is higher then it looks as I am 6 foot tall and the fill neck comes up to about my shoulders.

nice pic.

I haven't ever had a problem burping it, as my driveway points up a bit towards the garage. hopefully it's the cap. If it's not the cap, I'm at a loss.

alrighty. got the new cap 2 days ago and put it on today (cuz I've been using Joe's 4runner for work). fits very well. let the truck running in the driveway for about 20 minutes and then took it for about a 20 minute ride.....no problems. so I'm thinking it was likely a bad seal on the cap. probably wore it the hell out because I am neurotic about checking the fluid level and oil and everything....unlike how I used to be.

so.....STANT 10229 is the one to use. so, thanks TF and Terry!!!

so...yep.

truck still runs fine...mostly.

starting to make me a bit nervous with some little gremlins here and there.

speedometer stopped working altogether about 2 weeks ago. would not work sometimes and worked just fine other times. so now I am going to have to search and fix the darn thing. although I'm not overly concerned about speed anyways, because my trip to work is fairly routine and I just keep up with traffic. in the past, I drove without dashlights for a few years and still was able to accurately tell how fast I was going by how the truck acted. but, yep, something I have to fix.

I'm a bit nervous I may have a headgasket issue, in that I am losing coolant ...somewhere. no visible leaks, but my old body does not want to get under the truck more than I have to. so, for now, I keep it topped off.

oil leak is same as it was from the pan, but unfortunately, I think I can see oil coming from above that area too. hoping that it's just the valve cover or half-moon plug, but dreading that it ay be something more. don't have the finances right now to do any major repairs, so I will try to limp it until the spring and likely pull the motor and do it the right way instead of breaking my arms attempting a partial rebuild in the engine bay like I did.

would love to give this thing a frame-up restoration, since eventually I would love for it to be m little guy's truck (he's 11) and my wife's 4runner mine. still have to pay her's off and then it will be mine and she can get something else.

so things are status-quo.

still have to check compression to the cylinders to start the rule-out, rule-in process.

should pressurize the cooling system to do the same too.

a few moths back , sometimes when I would start the truck it would run like hell until I hit the gas a few times, almost like it was starving or that maybe (and I hope not) like a plug was fouled. when I pull plugs eventually to check compression , I will also check the plugs and try to get a peek inside to see what the piston tops look like.

for now, I know that Joe's 4runner runs well and is there in case mine just dies.

I hope it isnt a head gasket issue, especially as careful as you were putting it together. What about your cooling fan, maybe it isnt functioning properly and causing a heating issue, dont think I seen you mention thermotat, but I could of missed it. If you are not finding any leaks, check the exhaust. My 91 was losing it thru the exhaust valve and out the tail pipe.

Next time you tune it up or pull the cover off, retorq the head bolts and see if any are loose. I sure hope you dont have to go thru a head gasket again.

Your speedo is electrical driven. They changed in 91 from mechanical to 92 electrical. If I recall right, it is just a plug that connects to the speedo on the tcase. I have that SR5 guage if you need it. You would just need to adjust the tach and change sending units. It is out of a 94 Runner 3.0 auto.

Having a daily driver down is nerve wracking, I feel for you on that. If by chance you do have to do it again, it does make it so much easier on the bones working on it out of the truck. I can understand having to get under it as age starts to have it say. Losing flexibilty.

Maybe someday you will get to do a frame off resto on your 92. If that day does come up, dont let it worry you. They are easy to to do, just takes alotttt of time, but is rewarding and with what your truck and the length of time you have had it, it would be special.

probably today...maybe not...I will start flipping through my FSM and research what to do. the speedometer is not so much a worry for me, but a worry when Joe borrows my truck...not cool.

as far as the leaks....yeah, you and me both on the head gasket issue. but as compared to doing the whole shebang like last time, it should be relatively "easy''.

would love to do the whole frame-off resto....likely would be a box-off resto though leaving the cab in place. would love to rhino line the underside of the box to make it last a wee bit longer. I have rust on the box that I've repaired but will only last so long.

would love to eventually make this truck my youngest's truck.

keep holding that gauge pod....teehee

EDIT...I have the dual-stage thermostat. no overheating issues since that one day, but am still losing antifreeze.I have slowly been adding toyota red to the mix so I will be able to dilute my water as well as pick up any smell of antifreeze.

once again, my FSM leaves me no more informed than before I read it. booooooooo

after doing some searching and reading I have come to the preliminary conclusion that the VSS (vehicle speed sensor?) is still working since I have functional odometer and trip odometer but no speedometer (although it worked for a few minutes yesterday).

well...did some reading and I really don't want to chuck the whole cluster because the speedometer is not functioning. saw some talk about how people just use their GPS...no worries. I had been searching about how to do an aftermarket speedometer...so I got to thinking. so I downloaded a speedometer APP....an it actually worked. these cooky people, what will they think of next?

dork.

OK..so...here's the android app I'm using. tested it out today when driving Joe's 4runner. pretty cool. https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ys.speedometer

this will keep me in good shape until A)I get a gauge cluster (hello Terry..just not sure how to swing that one) or B)I get a dedicated GPS or C) I figure out some way to fix this. I find it very hard to believe that the solution is to swap clusters....seems like we fix everything around here but this is not fixable?
