Hi guys. My new diffs with 5.29 gears and a rear Spartan locker to match my ordered 35's are on the way from ecgs. I know I'll need to pull my rear axles but I've never seen an adapter plate at Canadian Tire when I've been looking at tools.

My Haynes manual says I'll need one and a slide hammer to get them out.

Any ideas on where I might find one? My tool shop options are very limited so far up north though.

I didn't have to use an adapter plate (on my 86 axle) I just used a prybar. Its easy to try. Pull a wheel, undo the 14mm nuts and try to pull the axle out. It will either go or it won't. You could always rig something as an adapter plate. Have an old steel rim with the toy bolt pattern? cut the middle out 1 inch out side the stud holes. Weld on some chain. Ta-daa.

 

Although it was two years ago, IIRC when I installed my rear diff I did not have to fully remove my axles. Remove the flange bolts/nuts and you can carefully move the axles outboard enough for the install w/o even disconnecting the brake lines. Be aware that fluid may come out when you separate the axle from the housing.

Its what I did and it worked perfectly.

If I understood correctly I can just use gasket maker and not have to buy a new gasket?

 

Yes - FIPG - Form In Place Gasket.

Toyota has the best but pricey and, of course, only at the dealer. I have used that as well as Permatex 'Right Stuff' with great success and its at O'Reilly's, Autozone, etc.
