Hey guys, I'm having some issues with an engine swap I just did. I have an '86 4runner, 22re, and I put in a 22re from a '91 pick-up. Obviously things bolted up just fine, but I'm having some issues with the electrical side of things.

Mostly my issue is the wiring harness (from the engine to the computer/interior) With a 5 year age gap, things are not matching up. I was just going to splice the wires together, but there are an odd number of wires. I went to the bone yard today and got some pulgs that will match with the harness from the '91. Any ideas on how to make this work? Has anyone done this before?

 

Everything external to the old engine/truck (the 86 engine) should bolt straight up to the 91 head and block. So I'd take everything off the 91 engine and put the stuff from the 86 on it. Basically, you only need to swap the 'long block' assembly (engine block and head).

 

...that is unless you've got some compelling reason to keep the electronics from the 91 on the engine, and in which case you'd want to swap the whole engine harness / ECU over.

 

I put the '91 engine in because I was getting fuel in my oil. Not sure what the deal was, so I didn't want to change over the old stuff, possibly transplanting problems...

I have the ECU and the harness (from the engine to the ECU) off the '91. If I can make that work, then great...But, if my fuel issue has nothing at all to do with the intake/fuel unit, then I guess that pulling the stuff off the '86 might be best.

The ECU off the '86 says 22r on it. The '91 says 22re. I'm not sure if that could be an issue?

 

The only real place fuel and oil have the chance mix is in the cylinders (barring mis-routed vacuum lines), maybe a bad head gasket or really worn rings. I see you're new here (but not necessarily new to working on toyotas since you decided to swap a whole engine) but did you do a compression test on the old engine? What testing did you do that made you decide to swap an engine in?

And my 88 4Runner's ECU (the truck in my avatar) also says '22r' on it. But there are differences between different ECU's and what they can do. Some need a knock sensor and some don't, there are different ECU's for different injector types... some are for California vehicles (and might be installed outside of California) and some aren't.

 

And I did mention vacuum lines above... it's possible for the fuel pressure regulator to leak into its vacuum line, the charcoal / evap canister to leak, have the fuel return line hooked up wrong... or just have a vacuum line hooked up wrong, which is again why I asked what testing you did to determine you needed to replace the engine.

 

The compression teat I ran on the old engine went someting like this: 35, 75, 35, 75. Pretty much the rings were shot. I determined it would be cheaper to buy this used 22re fromt the '91 with 120,000 on it, than it would be to rebuild the '86. The comperssion test check out at about 155 on all four, so I went with it.

 

All you had to do was take the long block from the 91 and put it in the 86.
Basically this:

and put it in.

And then not worry about all the wiring and harnesses and stuff and just bolt things together and go.

 

22re's from 85 up to 95 should be mechanically the same, meaning the pistons, cam, head, block, bearings... so you don't have to worry about using the 91 electronics on the 86 since the 91 and 86 are the same engine and what changed between 86 and 91 is all electronics and smog / emissions and usign the 91 stuff would only matter if the truck was a 91.
If the frame and body are 86, then use the 86 electronics, manifolds, O2 sensor, etc. on the 91 engine.

It's all in and ready to go. However, in light of the possible vaccume problems, do you know of a good site that shows maybe pictues or diagrams of where things need to go? I've loked around, but not much luck.

 

vacuum hose routing changes based on year, model, options, location.
should have one stuck under the hood though for the 86.

 

Oh...good. So, that's a negitive on the diagram decal. Any other ideas? Pretty much, just look around until I find a rig identical to mine and have him pop the hood?

I'm guessing my 88 is pretty close to your 86 but... can't be sure.

 

Or go to Toyota and ask them for the vacuum line routing diagram decal/sticker. Might cost like $5 or so bux.......

 

in 1988 the emissions bumped up a bit and increased the amount of vaccum lines in 88 trucks and runner by about 20-30%.... but it being a 91 engine should be 95% the same in all ways....
