The problem as I see it is, you spend $3500 to get a badass 3.0, and it only performs slightly better than a 3.4 you could swap for about the same (maybe less) money, and the 3.4 takes up less space in the engine bay and gets better mileage. Hell, for $3500, you could probably swap a SC 3.4 and blow the 3.0's doors off...

The EFI on the 2.4 and the 3.0L is very similiar. I haven't seen very many (well, any) success stories with the SMT6 and the 22RTE. You might ping Jeff Mosk in regard to issues that he ran into. Reference:

What's the SMT6 cost, anyway?

Dont be so sure! IMO a N/A 3.0 can be made to equal a N/A 3.4. If I sank 3500 or so into my 3.0 it BETTER be making 250hp or more. The 3.0 only has to handle 15 psi to achieve that 250 mark and thats been done (and more) with a bone stock bottom end a standard HG.

As far as gains, well they look good. The one 3.0L I got to mess around with responded well. As far as "when" you would need an ECU or injector upgrade, well for me it was about the 7 PSI mark, the AFR's were hanging in the 12.0 range at 7 PSI, and for a non-forged piston engine that is street driven with pump gas......that's a little to lean for me. I'll let you guys know more soon, I bought a '91 4Runner to continue on with a 3.0L turbo kit, as far as a remote mount, it won't happen, because STS has it patented and most importantly the performance of a remote turbo suck. You have to remember that STS advertises customers that are OH SO HAPPY, but more than likely most of those customers have no other turbocharged vehicle, they have no idea what a boosted car should perform like.

I think the gains are worth the money versus a swap for a 3.0L, if I an make my STOCK 22RE truck make 203 HP at the wheels with boost......a 3.0 should have no problem making 250, safely. I think the biggest problem is everyone over analyzes everything, they think the 3.0 is a worthless engine and because of the HG problems they are not worth messing with. 9 times out of 10, 3.0 engines I have worked on only blew the head gaskets because of very poorly engineered exhaust system, they usually pop the driver's side back at the wonderfull exchange of exhaust flow at the collector, a turbo kit eliminates the poor flow. I am working on a easy plug and play setup for the 3.0, I have found a company that makes the computer plugs so I don't have to find stock ECU's and gut them to get the connector so you guys can plug a Megasquirt right into your factory harness. Darin I know your saying "what the HELL", but I'm not touching the P.N.P. market for the 22RE's, in fact as soon as they get those connectors and the part number for the 22RE's I was going to contact you so you could buy them. I'm not saying the 3.0 is the best stock motor for turbocharging, but look at the Zillions of late model Mustangs and Camaro's guys throw blower kits at all day long running 8~17 PSI.....and they are non-forged motors, not to mention the Camaro's since 1993 and the Mustang Cobra's sport a factory compression ratio of 10.5 to 1!!

You guys can stick to your engine swaps and the headache that goes with, all I know is the best race of my life was a Chevy 350 powered Toyota....and he got spanked by a stock 4 cylinder with a few pounds of boost!!

I don't have any pics of the kit or pieces, my own personal 4Runner is in the shop now and I'm putting a kit together for it. Once it's done and running pics and dyno results will be posted. I must warn you......I don't have alot of time to work on my own things so it might take awhile, in fact for the last couple of days my truck has sat outside for lack of room from all the customer vehicles in the shop. I had a guy call me from Dallas that wants his '90? truck turbo'ed, but first he wants me to convert it to a stick because the auto is going out and he don't know if it will make the drive to Vegas.....he even offered to fly me down just to convert his truck to a stick and drive it home to turbo it.....All in all if he is that serious his truck will done before mine, but either way you guys will have some info soon of a complete 3.slow to 3.GO solution!

I know this is just a smidge of topic but has anyone thought of adapting the supercharger off an MR2? I know the boost would not be crazy but then according to the haynes manual the 22RTE was only making @5-7psi boost anyway. And I would like to be able to continue to use the cheaper regular gas. If I brought this up previously forgive the repeat...
