Problems with SMT6
Hey guys,
I have setup an SMT6 on my truck (22RET) and for some reason whenever I run the jumper the SMT6 for bypass the vehicle runs ok (although in need of some tuning to compensate for the slightly larger injectors and afm), when I swap in the SMT6 the truck runs much worse. It's not driveable, you can't even rev much past 2500 rpm.
I have verified the wiring several times. I am only affecting the analog signal from the airflow meter, I'm not modifying the ignition signal. The software reports that the input and output voltage are the same as I have not made any changes to the map. How can this be the cases?
I'm about ready to pull this sucker out and put it on eBay. For something that is basically a glorified AFC, it seems like way to much work.
Thanks!
Ben

Have you talked to someone about the setup for this thing? I understood they had an install for the 22RTE. Have they had success? Maybe if I saw a diagram, I could give you more information.
If you're intercepting the signal from the AFM - and that's the only signal you're messing with, have you confirmed input and output from the SMT? Using about 3 pieces of standed wire, you can stick them into the ECU connector and get a decent voltage reading off of them w/o cutting anything.
Called them for support? I had a look at the manual for that thing, it's not much fun.
Megasquirt can handle your larger AFM and injectors, btw....

I tried calling where the previous owner purchased the unit from, but he wanted me to send it back to be "setup up" for $75. I am pretty confident I have the settings right, so I don't really want to waste the money.
Plus, the way the SMT is configured it really has no advantage over an Apexi SAFC. In fact its a bit more of a pain to use a laptop then a hardware device. So, since I already own an SAFC ("borrowed" from another one of my cars) i decided to pull it out and see how tuning goes with that (and a wideband o2). My injectors are only 320cc, so they are not so much larger then stock that I anticipate problems. I have tuned injectors 50% larger then stock with an AFC and it ran fine on other turbo cars.
I know megasquirt will do it, but I'm not sure I'm committed to a full stand alone yet. I don't think my goals exceed what can be reliably (and easily) tuned from a "beefed up" stock setup. (Supra AFM, 320cc injectors, SAFC II, ct26, fmic). If/When I'm ready to step up injectors again, I'll probably be looking at megasquirt.
Thanks for your input. I'll let you know how it goes..
Btw, Nice truck!

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.
For starters, I will explain what I know about the difference between the SMT6 and an AFC.
the SMT 6 undeniable has far more functionality and a higher resolution customizable fuel map then the Hi throttle/low throttle map on the AFC. SMT supports things like additional injectors, timing deflection, map input and probably more.
Both units generally serve the same main purpose, modifying the signal from your airflow meter to the ECU allow you to 'tune' your vehicle. However the SMT6 requires a laptop where the SAFC is a standalone hardware device.
For my purposes I don't feel like I need all that functionality. That combined with my issues I feel like I should pull it out and install the AFC when I get home. (Out of town until the 7th). SAFC's can be anywhere from $150 used to $300 for the new fancy pants color screen ones that don't do anything more (unless you have vTec) then the ones that cost $100 less. I can't speak for the drivability in my truck, but I have used them on other turbo cars with great success. Its not as good as a standalone because you can't do things like adjust your injector dead time to compensate for larger injectors, but I and many people I know have tuned their cars from 450cc to 660cc injectors and were able to pass emissions and still got respectable mileage, not that they could ever keep their foot out of it.
Currently my global trim is zero. Which I understand to be no modification to the analog signal. The Analog In and Out read the same voltage, however the vehicle clearly runs far worse then when the SMT is bypassed with the jumper dongle.
I have only tapped the ignition signal to read RPM, I'm not modifying the signal at all. The only signal that is anything other then tapped is the AFM.
My issue is simply I can not get the vehicle to run the same as the stock ECU when the SMT6 is installed but zeroed out. In this state it should have no impact on the running condition of the vehicle.
Its a strange situation, which is why I'm inclined to pull the sucker out and try another solution. But I'm open to suggestions because I won't have a chance to touch it for a few weeks!
Thanks guys..

I did post and didn't get a single response. The best use for the SMT I have found so far is finding new words to fit the acronym. I'm sure the rules of the forum prohibit me from posting them, but you can use your imagination.
I'll let you guys know how it goes with the Apexi SAFC. Thanks!

Have you thought about ditching out on the piggy back style management and just going full on standalone? I have a friend who builds meggasquirt for people.
I was going to run it on my corrado.I liked the idea of having a target a/f setting. you can set a target a/f and once running the ecu will adjust for that.
If you want his # to talk to him more about it send me a privatemessage...Oh and id love to see more of your runner.Looks amazingly clean!!!
