'89 4Runner - Why the Nasty Engine Noise? See video...
Yota-tech'ers,
Did the head gasket and welded the hole in the timing chain cover that got eaten away by a timing chain with broken guides.
Belts are all disconnected.
22 RE 2.4
Makes nasty noise that sounds mechanical, not vacuum related (could be both possibly...)
Novice mechanic looking for help!
Thanks,
Denis

to me it almost sounds like plastic. Could the fan be rubbing on the radiator? Was it in any sort of front end collision? When you let off, the sound decreases slower than the engine sound making me also think fan clutch and fan. worth a look.

to me that sounds like a gear mesh noise. One thing comes to mind is the oil pump drive spline in backwards. or maybe the oil pump gears themselves not lining up right.
Did you get oil pressure yet?

The crankshaft pulley is spinning freely as in its spinning freely by hand? or you mean no belts attached?
Is it not even starting?
Checked the dizzy? made sure its timed correctly?
It does kind of sound like gears whining...

Duh...
Didn't put the throttle body to intake manifold together correctly - attached a ground over the stud before putting the EFI unit, NOT after, thus creating a fissure for air to get through.
