88' 4runner fuel pump compatibility options...

I have an 88' Yota 4runner that has been having some starting issues due to the fuel pump. I know that it has to be replaced soon and I have an option of getting a used fuel pump for free but the only problem is that it came out of an 91' 4runner. Would this work or would I just be wasting my time. Or what other fuel pumps would work? (also Ca smog friendly too) Any advise would be awesome. Thx.

First question:- How would the Ca smog police know whether or not you have the original fuel pump? It's in your tank!
When I put the 5M-GE out of an 88 Cressida in my 86 pickup (originally 22-RE) I installed the pump out of the 88 Cressida. It was bigger in diameter probably because it was for a 6 cylinder, but it and it's pickup screen/filter fit the 86 tank bracket just fine. From that experience I'd say that almost any other Toyota pump will work! Well at least until OBDII came into being.

Hmmm...that is interesting. Maybe I'll visit my local junk yard and pull one off from there. Is there any issues if I were to use a used as compared to a new fuel pump?

why not get the part number for your truck from somewhere like toyodiy or toyotapartszone and google it and see what years that part number fits?

Are there any "do's and don't do's" that I should be aware of if I'm using a used fuel pump? I don't want to have any problems down the road. Thx.

Running the Toyota part #'s will give you the exact replacement. Going down to your local parts store will give you an aftermarket replacement that will work as well, but both of these options are not free!
4runner_guy was asking the question if a used pump out of a 91 4Runner (which was free) would work? I said yes!
After running the part # for an 88 4Runner, that pump fits basically all Corollas, Celicas, Cressidas, MR2s, 4Runners and Pick-ups from 85 to 91 4cyl or 6cyl!

Great! Thx for the heads up! I'll give the 91' 4runner one a try and see how it turns out.
