87 Pickup hood latch

I've had this happen to me. I was able to unbolt the latch from its location in the cab and get need nose pliers where it snapped off and pull on it. Maybe you weren't so lucky and it snapped somewhere in the engine bay. I'd start with the latch inside the cab and see what you can do there.

Couldn't do anything in the cab. "Solved" the problem by cutting away segments of the plastic grille and removing the latch system mounting bracket (3 10mm bolts). Then it was easy to open the hood. Found the cable worn & frayed but intact. It had fallen out of the bracket. I reattached the cable to the bracket with tie wire. Jury-rig will work until I get a new cable. I don't mind the damage to grille as having the sections removed makes access to the hood latch system easy if I need it in the future.
