87 4runner 2.4l automatic only has 1st and 3rd gear

hello folks, new to the forums and I recently picked up an 87 4runner SR5 4x4 2.4l automatic. The truck is in decent shape, motor has 220k and sounds great. The trans on the other hand....the truck takes off fine in 1st then bogs down/no power, seems that its jumping from 1st to 3rd and then stays in third. I dont believe it shifts to 4th nor does it have O/D.

any help would be greatly appreciated, i would hate to have to buy a replacement trans already

when you click the o/d button does the light show on the dash?

if it does, click the button to where you dont see the light. plug in your jumper wire and go sit in the drivers seat, turn the key to the "ACC" and see if you get any error codes, if it blinks non-stop means its not showing any codes, if it starts blinking slow, then count the blinks and come post em up

if the light doesnt show up, replace the bulb and then do above

ok you need to take your dash apart to get to your cluster, should only take a few minutes and a phillipes head screw driver.

once you get it apart take a known good bulb and replace in the slot where the O/D light is just so you can read the code, or pick up some at the parts store to replace it with

then do the steps above

cool will try that and post back.

i've done a few searches and there appears to be lots of good info on here...i guess i need to rule these out too:
bad shift solenoids
TPS
throttle cable adjustment
clogged ports
kickdown cable adjustment.

do you know what tranny came in the 87 4x4 automatics?

im a little confused ..on this website it says
http://www.top4runners.com/runhist/runhist11987.html
-5spd manual overdrive transmission (standard on the 4runner SR5 5pass)
-electronically controlled 4spd automtic overdrive trans (ECT)with shift pattern selector and lock up torque converter (not available for 4runner SR5 5pass)

then i looked through here and did not see a transmission listed for the 87
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_A_transmission

so.....A340F?

First gen automatics have 3 gears plus o/d. The o/d button should be on the left side of the shifter.

If you get the light to work, you need to check for a code. There's a plug on the driver's side fender. Ground it with the ignition switched on, don't start. The OD light will blink any codes.

Here are the codes for the OD light.

Keep in mind that the codes are for electrical problems. Sounds light you #2 solenoid is not working, which could be a physical problem with it and not electrical. #1 and #2 solenoids work together in a pair one off and one on, both on or both off.

ok so i got the truck home and have started cleaning and tinkering....

-replaced all vacuum lines with exception to one that snakes down below manifold
-door buzzer disabled
-got aftermarket pioneer radio working (blown fuse)
-o/d light bulb was indeed burned (it now shows off/on)could not find a replacement bulb at my local autoparts store anyone know bulb #?
- removed non working factory alarm siren, unit and wiring
-glove box lock fixed
-grill fixed and clipped in place (thanks to my local PYP)
-replaced torn intake hose

-fixed front seat slider (hanger cable was dislodged)
-removed front lower spoiler
-painted fender arch moldings with bedliner
-removed mudflaps
-painted rear cargo area panels with bedliner
-added some washers to tailgate hinges (clunking noise over bumps gone)

so now here are the things i found that i could not figure out and may possibly be related to the transmission issue

*coolant temp sensor is a single prong. Local autoparts store shows a dual prong connector.

*Fuel pressure regulator nipple is unplugged

*cold start the temperature gauge goes straight up to normal operating temperature.

so my to do list:
- use jumper to pull any o/d light codes
- replace coolant temp sensor and connector
- replace thermostat (180 degree)

ok so finally got around to pulling the dash cluster out to check the bulbs and there was no O/D light on the dash. The only O/D light i have is located at the center of the dash to the right of the ashtray.

anyhow put it all back together and plugged in the jumper and the o/d did not blink so i take it i have no electrical problems.

update ...problem fixed. Dropped the pan and pulled out the solenoids....#2 solenoid was dead. Got one from a donor tranny and its fixed now.

now i just have to figure out why my coolant temp guage goes to normal operating temp on a cold start.
