87 22R A/T wont shift 3 / O/D

87 Toyota pickup 22R 220,000

Got truck from granddad when he passed away. just trying to get it back the way it was when I was a kid.

I have search with some help but no fix.

1st to 2nd shifts good, 3rd and O/D I have to let the gas go then it shifts.

I adjusted the (kick down) cable and its sitting now about half way with alittle slack in the cable. helped a little but did not fix. the cable was all the way in.

I seen post that it wont shift till it was up to temp. I was thinking it was running cool. It sat about 1/4 up the gauge. The gob of gasket maker on the housing I was thinking it had no thermostat. (it did tho) got a new one in and now it sits cooler at about 1/8 up the gauge. I don't know it that's causing it to not shift.

plus when I sit at a red light brakes on the truck feels like its trying to hop/jump forward. THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT!!

how long has it sat for ?

I would start by having the tranny flushed , you may just have a sticky valve

It did not sit for long. Maybe 3mo. At the most. And I would never flush a trans that's just asking for more trouble. I may change the filter. But I don't think that's it.

Shift solenoid could be going out. How does the fluid look? Have you changed it yet? These trans are pretty simple.

Looks clean. And no burn smell. Looks like it was just changed not long ago

My 92 22re does that. It used to be much worse until I adjusted the cable. Mine I think is stretched. Take a look at the Factory service manual online to see if it is adjusted correctly.
