87 22R idle problems
I bought an 87 pickup 22R, 2bbl carb, 4X4, 5spd, 210k mi., a couple of months ago.
I have an idle problem. It cranks up just fine, but when it worms up to operating temp it idles up to about 2100rpm’s. All vacuum hoses seem ok, I disconnected the fast idle, no luck.
I drove it over 300mi in one stretch, never did idle down.

Timing is correct, all vacuum lines ok. I am going to check the intake and carb for cracks or a loose throttle shaft tomorrow.
I should have already checked the carb, but it slipped my mind. I may need to make some bushings for the throttle plate.

22r's have coolant temp sensor. However, since the carb determines the fuel mixture, the sensor has more effect over timing (vacuum advance / retard) than the fuel mix... yet affecting timing affects the mixture.

I can take the idle screw out and remove the throttle cable, no affect. If I force the throttle by hand it will idle down, but when I stop it returns to about 2100 rpm's. When I start the engine cold it idles at about 1000 rpm.

seems to me that something is preventing the throttle from closing... based on what you just said.

That's what has me befoozled. Nothing on the outside of the carb is causing this, as far as I can see. oProbably a vacuum leak?

hey sorry for the hijack but i just put in my weber 32/36 and am having the same problem. the throttle arm linkage deal wont close all the way. the idle screw dosent even touch the linkage? anyone know how to fix this?
oh and throttle bodies are fuel injected engine components.

Did you figure it out?
I remove the idle screw and put it back in....this allows me to adjust the idle properly. I turn on my AC and it draws down the idle. Then when I turn it off the AC the idle shoots back up and can't be adjusted by the idle screw. I'm thinking there is a problem with the throttle body.
