87 22R carb issue? Bad idle

Im trying to figure out why my truck out of nowhere starts up fine then 10 seconds later it revs up and down almost stalling but doesnt. After I drive it around and get it to normal driving temp it idles so smooth that you can hardly notice its on. Anyone have an idea of if its just my carb that needs to be adjusted or not because its definatly running rich at start up in the morning, I can smell it. Any help would be good its my first carborated motor

Sounds like choke is sticking or closed down too much (acting like it's colder than it really is). Would make it run rich and choke the engine till it warmed up enough to open the butterfly. Not sure how on stock carb (assumption, you don't say) but you prolly just need to adjust your electric choke. check a fsm or haynes/chilton manual on "how to".

On a morning when it's likely to "act up", pull the air cleaner asembly and fire it up. When it starts choking out, manually open the butterfly a little and see if it helps. If that's not it we (yotatechers) may need more info about the truck (eng, trans, mods, ect)
Good luck!

Bvsv valve may be bad or the choke is going out... sounds more like the BVSV since its eradic... its a vacuum fitting driver side of the Carb mounted in the intake. tells the choke to work or not by opening/closing (honestly don't remember if it opens or.closes with heat)..

could run the vac hose to the choke diaphram skipping the BVSV.. see if the choke shuts off.

I'm on my phone otherwise I'd edit my posts... yea the BVSV should be closed cold. So assuming as it opens it it runs vac to.that diaphram off the choke. Assuming that turns the choke off... so maybe it's letting.vac thru and not letting the choke work properly?

Or, if you don't have to worry about emissions, pitch the stock carb allong with all the emisions garbage and put a webber with a one piece adaptor on. But, that's just how I'd do it.

i did just get the thing registered again so im good for a while, I had the truck for a year and went in dmv with 6 month old tags and my origional smog cert which was expired. I just paid my 200 bucks in fees and they sent me my tags with no proof of smog. I got lucky

˟˟˟˟ its getting wose, When I start it up while the engine is cold it will almost die running eally rough and smoke a little while im idling. It smells like gas sooo bad. But one it gets a little warm after driving it for 5-10 minutes, I kill it to go in to the store then when I restart it it runs perfect, I guess its is something to do with the choke im gonna change my plug wires since i have new plugs and clean the choke, i hope that fixes it

I really don't know much about the stock carb but here goes. Search the site and try to find the FSM for your year. Sounds like the choke is sticking. Make sure the elec choke is getting proper power, that the spring inside isn't gummed up or something and hose down the carb with carb cleaner. Check that the elec choke is set to FSM specs and there's no binding in the linkage. Good luck.

If you want to spend a little $$ money order a Holley remanufactured carb from summit. I put a summit carb on my 87 and it runs perfect. The passages inside the carb are so small that even soaking in carb cleaner and rebuilding is a gamble. 1 out of 2 carbs fail to clean up.
