8" interchangeability or rebuild?
Hey guys. I've got 1992 t4r that's got a bad rear end. It vibrated REALLY bad and had metal shavings when the diff fluid was drained. I've replaced a frozen ujoint but it's still bad. I'm looking for quick turnaround time. I have G144 axle code (4.88s v6, auto) and it's hard to find a drop in from a salvage yard around here. I was wondering if I could get any old 2 or 4 pinion axle and just regear it with 4.88s? I think the 2 pinion will be just fine?? Is this a possibility? Am I missing something important?
fyi I was quoted $550 plus $100 core for a new 3rd 2 pinion with 4.88s from West Coast Differential. Would like to get by even cheaper if possible.

You could find one from a vehicle being parted out and swap the thirds outright.
I regeard my rig to 4.56's for $220 (both diffs)
And we did another (truckfiend) to 4.88's for $350 (again, both diffs)
If you want to "get by even cheaper if possible" Craigslist or junk yard a diff and swap it yourself. I have seen just the rear diff for $150 or less on CL around here.
Links for anything you need to know about swapping em yourself are in here.....

If you got another diff and had it regeared to 4.88, you will probably be in the same price range as you are faced with now. Tried Ebay? Or the YT classifieds? 4.88's go pretty quick here.
