Is the 4WD system on a 1990 4runner V6 shift on the fly or do I have to be fully stopped to change over?

What front hub setup do you have? Manual hubs or the Automatic Differential Disconnect (ADD)?

With ADD, yes, shift on the fly between 2H and 4H. With manual hubs, shift on the fly if you have the front hubs locked, otherwise must be stopped to shift into 4WD (plus you need to hop out to lock in the hubs to really be in 4WD).

 

And slower than 11mph to shift into 4L, my first 2 toyota 4x4's were sticks, so it's just a habit for me to stop to engage 4L, even though my 4runner is an auto

 

If you have the ADD, you can be going up to around 50mph, don't even have to use the clutch to go from 2wd to 4wd and back. But it helps sometimes

 

non manual or locked manual hubs, all V6 transfer cases, auto or manual, can be shifted into 4hi up to 60MPH and as stated, below 11MPH for 4lo.

 

Just curious what the top speed is for 4WD?

 

I think the Owner's Manual may list 50MPH or something like that. But assuming everything is in good condition up front, whatever speed you want is fine, conditions permitting. I have driven at freeway speeds in my '85 with the front axle locked (in fact that was in FWD mode - rear drive shaft removed due to breakage) and it drove wonderfully.

 

no top speed, only a top speed on what you can shift into it at.

 

Ok just making sure. I was 90% sure that was the case, as is the 4th gen 4Runner.

I was on the expressway the other day and it was raining extremely hard, and lightning about every 5 seconds. Anyone in the northern Illinois area prolly saw it on Friday night/Saturday morning.

I was going to go into 4WD but I wasn't sure what the top speed was, and when to shift, and I didn't want to take any chances.

Now I know, no top speed, can shift to 4WD HI at up to 60 MPH, and 2WD at any speed (IIRC).
