4Runner died, Fuel pump???

I was on my way to the gas station the other night because I was almost on fumes. I lost power like I ran out of gas, only to realize it never died. It just lost driving power, but when I pulled of the road it was still idling. So I continued and threw $10 in till I could get to a Mobil (where I have a card for) the next day. The next day with only 15 miles on that 3.5 gallons my Runner died all together. The fuel pump was changed when I bought my 4Runner 7 months ago. Are the pumps going out like this a common problem, or should I be looking somewhere else?

By the way, it cranks just fine and every once in a while sounds like it fires and tries to start.

Not really, at least not the factory Toyota pumps, they are very reliable. What brand of pump was put in there 7 months ago? I guess this is a 3.0 V6? Has the fuel filter been replaced? Of course running it low on gas is never good for a fuel pump.

The pump was done by the Toyota service writer whom I bought it from, although I don't think it was a factory pump. She is checking to see where her parts dept got it incase it still has a warranty. (It was done under the table with one of her techs, or else it would be covered by Toyota.)

I put a new toyota fuel filter in about 4 months ago.

I pullled the PCV tube this morning and dribbled a little gas into the intake tube, and it fired right up (till the gas burned up). So it is fuel delivery problem. Just didn't know if there was something else that would make the pump not work?

First off, thanks for everyone's help. I did all the test to determine my pump wasn't coming on. So I pulled the tank only to find that the tech who changed the pump before I bought the 4Runner didn't get the plug all the way into the clipped position. It was just sitting loose in the pump. After plugging it in all the way it worked just fine. Put the tank back in and I'm back on the road.

No doubt. It was nice not having to spend $200 on a new pump.
