A compression check, will tell you everything you DONT really want to know.. Its easy, cheap, and will rule out, or rule in major issues very quickly....

Try resetting your ECU via disconnecting your battery for 15 min.

I had this problem with my 87 auto and I found a crack in the tube between the air box and the intake manifold.

put some 4.88 gears in it. also ohm your coil to see if it is going out.

My mom had a vw bug that she drove the urination out of, after 401k miles (it was a 69) it started running irradically and failing at idle, so me and my father were trying to assess the situation and eventually we just started it and pinned the throttle and a HUGE black / white cloud of smoke came out the back and it blew all this out it was crazy. What we figured happened was that she drives like a grandma never going above 3k rpm and so when we pinned it, it broke all the carbon crap out and blew out the engine, quite an experience.
