3vze weird noise
Hi, I have a 95 4runner sr5 v6 w/215K. Ok since I got it , it makes this weird sucking/raspy noise. Doesnt happen first thing in the am but after its warm it does it. Sounds like its coming from the aircleaner area or nearby. Any ideas what it might be? Are there any easy ways to check for vaccum leaks ?

Nothing aftermarket. And I just replaced the aircleaner if that matters. Kind of sounds like air is being sucked into something thats clogged maybe? But its totally noticeable after the truck is warmed up. When I first fire it up for the day it doesnt happen.

I gotta say air leak. Check the big hose between the air filter and the engine. When you lifted the cover to change the filter you may have cracked or loosened a joint or something. Since you don't hear anything until the engine is warm, and the air intake bends down pretty close to the driver's side manifold, I'd start there.

the main air intake hose, if leaking would make the truck run like crap...
Check the 1.25" diameter hose that runs from the hardline on the intake plenum to where it links up with the top of the air filter box. also check the smaller 1" hose from the vertically standing silencer box thats just behind the coolant overflow bottle. One of those two is off of its barb and you are hearing the reed valve....
It's quite the disconcerting sound.

Still have the problem, spent some more time today with it. Checked the hoses as suggested, seems ok. Pulled off everything from the air filter element to the main air inlet on the manifold. Seemed fine, re-assembled and made sure everything is tight but it still makes the noise. I checked the gate in the afm, it seems to be moving freely. I also pulled the air cleaner cap (afm piece) up while it was running. The noise seems to be coming from somewhere inside the hose/gate area. There's might be a wrecked 3vze in a pickup locally so im gonna call and see if the afm piece is still on it. Seems simple enough to swap it and see if it makes a difference. I also sprayed a bit of wd-40 (had no carb cleaner/propane) onto the hose connections near the afm area but nothing happening that I could hear from that. So I dont think its a leaky hose. The motor doesnt run that bad, so if its a vacuum leak I dont think its severe.
Thoughts anyone?

Mine makes the same noise you are talking about I think and I've had two other 3.0's so I think it's maybe just a normal noise the 3.0 makes. That is, if you are talking about the same noise I think you are. Or maybe mine has a leak too, but it runs fine. Just my 2 cents

This noise is definitely unnatural. I've been around other 3.0's that don't sound like mine does Just remembered my buddy has a 94 4runner sr5 thats almost at the parts stage, think I'm gonna have to relieve him of his AFM for a bit. I should almost make an audio recording of it and upload it somewhere so it can be heard. Wish I could trade some of my computer power for knowledge of vehicles.
I can stick my ear right up to the AFM and its definitely coming from that area. If thats not it I dunno, guess its off to the shop as much as I hate that.

There is a emissions valve of some type on the passenger side of the engine toward the firewall. It connects to the air filter intake via the large metal tube running across the front of the engine then to a rubber hose to the intake. I have heard a raspy, suck noise before when the short 90 degree bent rubber hose that connects this valve to the metal tube in tha back right side of the intake manifold was cracked and leaking. It only occured after it had warmed up. I replaced the old rubber hose and the noise quit.
With an intake vacuum leak occuring after the AFM you often notice an idle or other symptom problem.
Okay, I just checked the manual. It is the air injector valve. It is controlled by a VSV on the right fender.

I had an AFM act up in my truck, a 91 v-6, where the truck ran fine but the flap in the afm was being allowed to vibrate just a bit. It made a very loud roaring sound, thought a cat or something had been trapped in the motor.
