No top end oil pressure ? See pic please

86 YOTA 4X4 WITH 298K ON THE ORIGINAL ODOMETER.

I recently did the timing chain and head gasket with a kit from ENGNBLDR.

Head Gasket blew and ended up having gravy everywhere.
Chain Guides were intact-REPLACED
Old timing cover intact no wear through-REPLACED

Parts replaced:

Head Gasket-OEM
Water Pump
Oil Pump
Timing Cover
Timing Chain
Timing Tensioner
Metal Guides
Head Bolts
Thermostat
Radiator Hoses
Radiator Cap
Belts
Vacuum Lines
Spark Plugs and Wires

OK HERE IS MY PROBLEM

I believe the top end is not getting enough oil because:
1. Excessive Valve train noise even after adjusting valves HOT.
2. Engine PURRS at start up then after 5 minutes loud tapping noise begins.
3. Took OIL Cap off while engine was running and lots of air pressure coming out but engine does not stall or change idle when OIL cap removed. weird.

So .... I am guessing

1. Oil Pick UP tube blocked??
2. Bad Oil Pump??
3. Head gasket blocking the head passage??

In this pic below the area circled in yellow is where the oil ENTERS the top end and then drains down the front over the timing chain...
AM I correct or is it the other way around??

No oil does not enter there. Oil enters through the hole circled in red on passenger front side of engine. The hole in the rear is your drain.

Oil runs through this port and through the front of rocker arm assembly. Did you happen to disassemble rocker shaft assembly during rebuild?

Could be stopped up depending on water mixing with oil (sludge) you have ports that run through assembly and if stopped up will not allow oil

head gasket seems to be leaking. you should get a minor reaction with a paper towel over the open oil cap, but not feel it with your hands. it could be the rings as well. put a manual guage on an oil pressure port. if it bounces around, you have a rod bearing out, if it's just low, it could be a main, oil bypass valve, or internal leak. a couple hoses dealt with and you can operate it with the valve cover off, iirc. just have to have cardboard to deflect any oil spray from the rockers back down. was the head and block checked with a straitedge?

A BIG THANKS TO ALL YOU GUYS FOR REPLYING!! MUCH APPRECIATED !!

tj884Rdlx- Thanks for the pic it all makes better sense now.

87hoerunner- Had the head decked and both the head rocker assembly hot tanked but I didn't disassemble the rocker assembly...DAMN!! I bet it is plugged. Gonna tear that down first then replace the oil pump with an OEM pump. The ENGNBLDR oil pump just doesn't look like a high quality piece to me. I would have peace of mind knowing I had an OEM pump.
THANKS BRO!!

AKHeathen- Good info bro thanks! Yes. checked both block and head with a straight edge. Head was decked and hot tanked but did not disassemble the rocker assembly. ROOKIE MOVE - I KNOW!
Engine idles very smooth just hella noisy once the engine warms up.
Engine temp stays at about 1/4 way below mid point on the temp gauge.
I am definitely gonna check oil pressure as well.

Thanks Again Guys!!

at the very least, don't operate the engine again without thoroughly oiling the top-end. could also be as simple as a pickup tube leak.

First Day off in 7 days.
Removed the head bolts to remove rocker arm assembly.
Head Gasket will need to be replaced as coolant and a little oil is on the garage floor.
Rocker Assembly Rails are clean but the tiny holes in the arms and rails must be plugged.

Looks like this is gonna take a little while longer than expected as the head needs to be pulled so I can put in a new gasket.

Keep you posted

i usually verify the oil leak before tearing into it too far. i could be wrong, and anyone else could be wrong, we are not there. if i was there, i certainly would open it up and make it leak where i think it is leaking. could simply be a piece of junk in the oil filter bypass valve or something else.

Ok guys gonna turn the oil pump by hand and see if she sucks and pushes oil up through the little hole next to the front passenger side head bolt slot.
That is about the only way I can figure out to check to see if the oil pump is working.

So I finally got the crankshaft pully off and checked the pressure relief valve all looked well there.
put the head back on and bolted the camshaft and top gear together.

Even took off the oil pump seal to see if I had placed the gear on correctly..I DID.

I started cranking the crankshaft by hand and oil came thru the hole where the oil filter goes.
Put the oil filter back on.
Started cranking again without pausing just kept cranking that sucker.
Oil finally came up thru the head so WE ARE GOOD THERE!!

Looks like my mistake was not taking apart the rocker arm assembly and cleaning it all out very carefully and very thoroughly when I had it all taken apart the first time for the head gasket job.
I assumed it was gonna be clean enough since it was hot tanked with the head but I guess not...

LESSON LEARNED >>> DO IT THE RIGHT WAY THE FIRST TIME BY NOT RUSHING!!
