3VZE Low Oil Pressure When Warm

Hey y’all, I gotta 95 4runner 2wd and it’s been apparent to me ever since i’ve owned it that I have oil pressure until the motor gets to operating temperature. i know the gauge can sometimes be crappy, but you can hear some ticking from the valve train after driving it for a while after warning up. I’ve noticed an oil leak from the oil cooler (i’m planning on fixing it when I get the money) but I’m doubtful that would cause the low oil pressure. Could there be something clogging my pickup tube? my lil looks fine, no glitter or anything so I’m sorta lost. Would i need an oil pump? It’s only at 148k miles though.

You have not done the testing necessary to prove your oil pressure is actually low.
The 3vz engine does not employ hydraulic lifters, so valve noise is not really any indicator of oil pressure issues.
A good mechanical gauge temporarily connected to the oil galleys will tell the tale.
These engines do not carry full oil pressure until RPM's approach 2000 and idle oil pressure spec is very low.

i’d say the highest the oil pressure has gotten at 2000rpm is under half, at idle it’s almost right by the L. Owner’s manual says it should be somewhere over half at cruising speed (2100 RPM @65mph) and it still reads under half, or halfway above the first line. but that’s true, i haven’t taken a gauge to the galleys yet, where on the motor will i find these galleys

The factory oil pressure sender is tapped into a main engine galley.

Also check your wire on the connector where it plugs into the sensor, it can become frayed over the years and not give a good connection.

The oil pressure spec at idle speed on a Toyota is remarkably low. My guess is the FSM will give you something like anything over 4 psi at idle speed. And 4 psi barely moves the needle on the dash gauge. The range at 3,000 rpms will be pretty broad, too. The FSM will list spec as anything between 35-70 psi is good. I'd get the actual spec numbers for your engine, then go borrow a oil pressure psi gauge from a parts store loaner program and see what you got.

No kidding. 4.3 psi at idle, 36-71psi at 3,000rpm. You'll barely lift the needle on the combination meter gauge at 4.3psi.

Contrasting how my oil pressure guage manages what my CHILTON manual says it Ought to do... I think my truck is running low as far as oil pressure. The CHILTON manual bluntly acknowledges it... assuming it begins running underneath where it should on the oil pressure guage, PULL OVER AND TURN THE Motor OFF. So that got me stressed over it, and presently I'm attempting to sort out why my oil pressure generally peruses a cycle lower than it should during some random working condition. Does anybody know about any normal things that can cause a low oil pressure? What would it be advisable for me to search for? I drive a 1990 T4R 3VZ-E 4x4 AUTO w/100k+ miles.
