I am currently running 31x10.50/15 tires on my 89 4runner. i want to lift it and run 33's for some mild wheeling.
Whats the easiest way to do this and clear some skinny 33's?
I am not new to wheeling, have run jeeps for years, but this is my first yota as well as IFS rig.

If you search, you shall find what you are looking for. This topic has been beaten to death. Alot of real good advice already up here, just gotta look around for it.

 

depending on what size rim you are going to be running, you could fit some 33X10.5 with 1.5" ball joint spacers and rear shackle lift. take a look at 4crawler.com some great info on that site in respect to how much lift and what kind of lift for a specific tire

you can fit 33x10.5s with no lift, but with 2 in body, bj spacers and some new leaf springs you can do 12.5s or fit 10.5s really nice.

Ok so if i do a set of 1.5 ball joint spacers in the front, that seems easy enough.
Only thing is, I have 2 inch shackles in the back right now. i put them in when i bought the truck, the rear was sagging, and it looked wierd with the 31's.
Should I buy all new leaf packs? Go for a longer shackle? or add-a-leaf?

 

33x10.5's fit with NO lift for sure on 2nd gens (look up "tc")...

If clearance becomes a problem though, I'd cut or pound instead of blowing money on raising the COG...

 

yes, yes they do, but the first gen has smaller wheel openings.

 

Never am for sure on the generation changes from 89-90

Now it seems pretty simple, go with ball joint spacers and longer shackles...or just do all new leaves in the back.
I do want to go with some lift, because cutting really isnt an option, the bodt is really nice, esp. for a NE truck and i want to keep it clean.

My rims (aftermarket) should have proper backspacing.

 

no for better performance get some new spring packs. and get some shocks to accomadate.

only rubbing is under a hard left turn and its the tire on the sway bar, minimal rubbing

I'm not really sure if you even need to lift it to clear 33x10.50 tires on OEM 7" aluminum wheels like my ole 87 Runner had. Mine never rubbed....ever.

It was a boner stocker except for 571 gears. I also had the simpliest (cheapest) lift known to mankind.....crank the t-bars for 1.5" lift up front and shoved a coil over the rear axle housing for a 3" lift (the rears were saggy like almost every old Runner).

I sold it this summer to a 19 year old gal that loved the open feel of the Runner without the top on. She was pleased how soft it rode....and no squeaks like her dad's lifted Toy pick-up

 

Mmmm, since the Yota and IFS is new to you (for wheeling anyway) and you're already running 31's, and you're only doing why don't you simply wheel it as it is, with some minor mods and see what it'll do.
You certainly don't need 33's for "mild wheeling".
Were it me I would:
- Armor everything.
- Get a mild bl (1" ~ 2") allowing a skid under the xfer case/tranny that'll push it up more out of the way.
- Get a set of disco's for the front.

and wheeling it as it is for a while.

I'm from a Jeep background also (really built up '98 TJ running some of the toughest trails here in AZ) and I can tell you that without a doubt I can wheel a "properly setup" vehicle with 31's in far more places than most people running 33's as most of them don't set the vehicle up correctly to begin with

Build a strong foundation first (like armor) then go from there.

i think tc's order is armor lockers tires lift? and i am gonna follow it for the most part, with a skid and sliders front and rear lockers and lift it and put 33s

 

Yep - with "wheel the hell out of it" between each of those steps. By the time you get to "lift" you've learned A LOT about 'wheeling and will know which way you want to go - mild lift, long travel, SAS, etc...

IMHO, it's silly to buy tires if the ones you got aren't worn out...

 

I understand what you guys are saying, and I agree. Armor is in my plans too.
I do need new tires, and i do want to put 33's on it, but i fully agree about knowing how to drive being a key part of wheeling.
I guess when i said mild, i mean mild compared to my jeep with 36's and locked fr/rr.

Then get 33x10.50's - they will fit fine for driving around and won't rub too bad offroad - will give you some time to see what kind of lift you want to do (or if you even need any).
