loose belt is certainly the first thing I would check.

If you want to be sure it's a belt take both (3 if you have AC) off and run your engine for a minute. It won't hurt anything if you don't run it for an extended amount of time. With the belts off see if it's quiet. This is how I determined my wife's car had a bad idler pulley.

check the power steering tensioner pulley. Sumtimes the bearing goes out causing squeaky belt.
cheap to replace.
glazing would be shinyness on underside of belt meaning it has been slipping.

This is where I'd look first as well...

The idler pulley's are pretty cheap and easy to replace, and they go bad all the time. They make noises like you describe when they go out too.

Sorry I dont mean to hyjack this thread but im having the same problem with my 4runner, when i first start it up it will run fine for like 5 minutes or so and then it starts making a loud squealing sound and it continues until it warms up but once its warm you can drive it all day and never hear again. I replaced all 3 belts and i also had to replace the harmonic balancer due to being bad. Could anyone maybe tell me what this might be cause its really loud and annoying.
