That sucks Raghorn, I am a service tech for construction equipment and we stand behind our work 100% and will do what it takes to make it right with the customer if there is a mistake, i cant see how people can operate a successful business not backing up their crap.

I KNOW, Rocker, Raghorn!
My first machinist screwed up ABOUT EVERYTHING POSSIBLE! Crank/ Cylinders/ CAM/ Timing Cover Install/ Cracked the Front Face of Block/ Re-used all 8 valves with a crappy grind--loose in the guides, etc./Kept my LCE timing kit w/steel guides!...... and more!!!!
When I called him, PISSSSSSSSSSSED OFFFFFFFFFFFFF..... he said, "Wow, I'm really sorry man.... it's been about a year, right? Far as the timing kit, I could have swornnnnn!" ..... To which I replied.... "NO, you can NOT swear, as I don't have it here, and I KNOW I put it in the box of OEM stuff with you. And now that I've removed the BOTCHED timing cover and to be honest, the REST OF THIS MOTOR, down to the short block.... I can see, with my own eyes, IT'S NOT HERE, THIS IS PLASTIC GUIDES CRAP!" I sent pics to LCE, they told me, "we've not sold a plastic guide kit since 1999 or so and that's NOT our stuff, any of it".... So I called the orig. machinist back.... and he said, "I looked, it's not here, ... I could have sworn! Lemme call you back." AGAIN? So finally, I CALLED BACK as he didn't, and he says, I'm not kidding you, ..."I can get one of those kits for you if you want one"...... To which I asked, "You want me to PAY FOR IT?" .... He answers, "I can give it to you at my cost".... WTH???????? I swear, man,.... I never thought such a formerly HUGELY reputable shop would be a bad choice..... but after the fact, as I started asking the "next machinists" I was trying to choose from, .... I got nothing but answers like "OH, THEY did it?? Oh God, no wonder! I get TONS of work from that which he's just done or had worked on not too long before. Love that guy, but he's really lost it, or doesn't care, ...I just can't figure it out!"
That shop put me through over a year of chasing my tail/HELL! Then didn't wanna honor his work!
The good thing of it? I learned TONS from where I was.... and ended up building MY OWN, last time...and it's performing nearly flawlessly, 4K later, and not leaking a drop, UNLIKE HIS! That's really sad,.... I mean, I'm a newby to these of not even 1.5 years! Yet, I can do a better job with the help of a new machinist, simply guiding me through??

thats its just ridiculous, i called and bitched at my guy in the nicest way possible and hes going to grind my valves the way they should have been done the first time, i cant believe ive got to hold this guys hand and walk him through the processes, i cant wait until im done with him, just a couple more days and i will be, his excuse for not grinding the valves was "well you said you were doing it on the cheap, so we did a vacuum test and the valves werent leaking so we just left them" WOW thats all i can say, its just not the right way, considering i paid for it and all.

wow, ... .well, ....
Just remember, .... Engnbldr will tell you, "Our valves are OEM quality or BETTER" and the whole set of 8 was 54$ shipped! i mean...I just went that route, then added new manganese bronze guide for another 3.25$ each(x8, which was cost makes it 26$ + 54$)... So at 80$ + 19$ or something for Viton seals from 22reperformance.com, or so,.... I then added all new racing springs{engleheimer or something? lol... Good ones, for sure} for pretty cheap from a local guy in CA(dual layer spring kit), walking in and buying all this stuff rather than paying for shipping... and now have all new viton sealed, new valved, new bronze guided, new dual layer racing spring head for around 270$ (he only charged me 80$ for the Head "WORK") I LOVE knowing what the hell I'm talking about, now.... THESE GUYS WILL NEVER rip me off again! LOL.
In all fairness.... not ALL or even most are like that..... but I seem to find those that are, eh? lol.

ya i probably should just go and get new valves, but im outta money and a "good" grind should do just fine for a while, i hope everything works this time, i think i may just end up being a pro at assembly and disassembly after all this is over lol, i guess its not worth getting mad about any more, not much is going to happen if i get mad so i might aswell laugh about it and move on? sounds easier than it is, lol

Nah, ...it's easy enough, as long as you face and realize that IT'S POINTLESS to fret, ya know? Nothing get's accomplished. Used to be that ALMOST EVERY biz honored their Blue Collar Work! Now it's seeming harder to find, ESPECIALLY with Japanese Motors! Just try to find another reputable machinist... Can't always even trust word of mouth....Guess who my local dealership is now using for their machining? YEP, THAT SAME SHOP THAT SCREWED ME! I spent 20 minutes speaking with their head rep.... They are now researching... SO, if a Dealership didn't find out what kind of crap is going on there so easily.... I guess I shouldn't feel so ignorant, eh? lol.
You'll get it, and the satisfaction of getting it all together and purring like it should, carefully double checking everything, etc., .... it's WELL worth it, man... Every mile I drive, I know I BUILT THIS, in large part, even some of the machining. I NEVER would have learned all this had I not been screwed over.... and then where would I be? Yeah, I'd have a motor done right the first time, but that's besides the point! lol.... It would be a motor built by someone else and I would still have the same knowledge level as before, simply "disassembling and reassembling" 'finished' work, ya know? Plus, I will have others..... now I don't have to go through the same thing with yet another 'HOPE' smorgasbord! lol. I WILL KNOW!
Might wanna ask him, .... "Will you be micrometer inspecting the guides after the grind?" I mean, they'll be taking more off, ya know? Seals can only do so much and seal only so well for so long..... IF the guides below them have too much play around the valve stems. Personally, I would call Tod at engnbldr, really quick, and ask him what he would do, then have that very 'lecture' ready for this guy who, now, again, has your head. I'm sure he does nice work... but charging you for work that was not done? NOTHING ETHICAL ABOUT THAT, MAN! Again, don't get worked up... you're on the path to 'SOLUTION', through a good Process of Elimination... But why not BE CERTAIN of 'EXACTLY' what his plan is, right? he's got it pretty much apart... why not install new chilled iron guides at 2$ a pop for you, .... I mean, HE DID CHARGE for it, already, right? then you're out, what, 20$ more, max? The bronze-manganese guides... they're about double......and considering the motor is fresh, bottom end side... I wonder why he wouldn't just do it complete, while it's apart? Guides take an hour, max...then some finishing of each guide to fit the valves/vice versa..... and voila, at least it would be RULED OUT, CONCLUSIVELY, that "it's NOT THE HEAD, period!"
PS> Just be sure to clean that block deck like a banshee and the head as well, ya know? Not sure if you know what happened to me, with a NIPPON-OEM HG.... blew right off the bat, and everything was done properly.... at least from what I could see. Redid the job, tearing it down AGAIN, with a Felpro Perma torque HG, and just 2 days later, it held just fine... without any further resurfacing, etc. (I only mention this because, ...well, you think you're mad now? ... as me how I know how mad you COULD be, eh? hahaha)

ya no kidding, i actually went out last night and cleaned the block surface and head surface really good, so it should be fine, im also dropping off my injectors today to get tested, so i kinda hope they find leaky injectors so i can solve the "rich" problem, but either way at least i will know for sure that they're good.
#148
ok, so i decided it was worth just putting new guides and valves in it regardless, so now i know it wont be a problem for sure, i should get the head back tuesday, and i got my injectors to the shop, the guy informed me that they havent ever been rebuilt and the rig has 178k miles on it, so its definitely time, so at least ill be able to rule out a couple more things
#149
Ya never know on the injectors.... might make a difference being in OR..... more moisture, etc. I pulled mine at 258K miles and they'd never been serviced.... they all passed, and only one was leaking a lil... and the CSI was "OK" as well(took them into RC Injectors, up the road here in Torrance, CA)...BUT, ...they went from "OK" on 3 and "Barely Passing" on 1/think they were like 168, 169, 170, 167 when they got them/ to 189 on all 4 and "EXCELLENT" when I got them back... So at 257K, no smoking, no realllllly obvious mileage drama.... I might have just been lucky, ya know? lol. I've seen many guys having them checked and they were MESSED up! ...with even LESS miles than me, ....so it all depends, right?
Far as the valves and guides.... did ya call Tod or go over there and pick some up from him? (engnbldr Tod, of course, lol). Or just let the guy use the ones he gets?

Ya I just didn't want to be left wondering about my head, now with new parts I can really know that its fully rebuilt, and it was only $70 bucks for the parts, I figure its a small price to pay
#153
Small price, indeed! And,.... from everything I've learned in the last few months.... without pulling it apart and taking a micrometer and dial indicator to the guides, valves, ....how could they say, "Oh, it's all good
" .... ? Anyway, all that will soon be ruled out, ....that's good! You been testing/multimeter checking sensors and such while it's apart?
Hoping the injector read out gives you some answers as well... But if not, don't give up just yet, ya know? lol. You'll get it, man!

dang youve been through a crap load with this build. hope you get it all squared away vary soon. new to the forum, researching what to do with my 22re, rebuild or 3.4 swap but 1 important lesson ive learned is if i rebuild i had better do my home work on my machinist. hope its smooth sailing from here on out

Ok soooooo......... Doesn't seen to be running rich now, but its still burning oil, it seems like there was oil in the lower half of the intake... Does anyone know if the EGR can cause anything like this? With the EGR off the head I tried to blow through it but couldnt pass any air through it, maybe its supposed to be that way I don't know, I'm really at a loss here.......
