22re Smoking in my 89 4runner
#121
This is where I read that...... and here's a quote, before the link.............
"Compression for any Toyota 22RE cylinder ought to be among 142 psi and 178 psi."
Link; http://toyotaguide.com/toyota-22re-m...mpression.html
Now, like I said, maybe, if you're leaking oil down through the seals and guides into the hole, you might depress combustion and yet raise compression. But either way, that seems high to me for a non 20R-Head on 22RE high compression motor or 22R-TE. I might have that backwards, but I've read up quite a bit on guys who build 150+HP 22RE's, how things went wrong with design from one company to the next when building a hypo 22re and then, ..... they figured it out through the compression readings being too low or high, etc. Anywhoooooooooo... let's hope for some more input on that.... and hopefully you can share if you've pulled the head yet or not. I don't wanna talk you out of it or into it, ya know? If you're soaking it down with fuel in there, maybe a hydrolock could happen(guys? Not sure on that, rocker).
One thing I know.... all that smoking you're describing is not normal. lol. Could you possibly get a video of that, Rocker, before you yoink the head/if you yoink the head?

Right on, and Rocker, don't mind me, ...I'm just one of those "getcha thinkin" kinda guys, lol. Not that you're not thinking, ..... rather, when we dudes get correlating data flying, things are bound to get solved with 2-3 thought baskets steaming away! lol.
I hear ya, it probably would make you more comfortable, and God willing and the creek don't rise.... that WILL be your issue on the 'oil consumption' end.
Curious if you could answer me though....
Is it USING oil? Are you losing it by the time you check every so often? Etc....
Also, did you dig any deeper through your shop or Ted of engnbldr or otherwise on the high compression stuffs?
Anyway, best wishes, Rocker, wish I could lend a hand. If you were in L.A., I would!

ya its using oil, i drove it 175 miles and ran it a bunch in my driveway and lost about 1/2 a quart, the head will be off tonight and to the machine shop tomorrow....as for the running rich part, im just not sure where to start looking, i looked at the injectors but they look really clean, probably gonna have them at least tested here in town, but other than that im just not sure, seeing the 2 middle plugs wet just kinda makes me scratch my head, when i pull the vacuum line off the FPR the rpms go up, so that must be ok? thinking about tapping the fuel rail and installing a gauge while i have it out, could it be an ECU problem, is there any tests for that? igniter/coil problem (doesnt seem likey to me but who knows) Distributor problem? cap and rotor looks fine, airgap is within spec....i dont know

UPDATE:
So i got the head pulled last night, i took it in to the machine shop today and the owner was there when i got there and this is what he says to me "Well i asked my son (the guy that does most of the work) what we did on it and he said we just resurfaced it, you said the motor was rebuilt about a year ago so we figured the head was good" WTF!?!? i told him when i dropped it off the first time that i wanted it completely gone through, and to top it all off he's only going to give me the gaskets i need at "his cost" he should give me the damn gaskets for FREE.....so freaking frustrating, my heads about to explode right now, how can someone run a business that way???

Well I just got off the phone with the machine shop guys and he said the guides are in good shape, he also said the seals look ok but are putting new ones in anyways and i can get the head back today, se said he couldnt really find anything wrong with the head....so im going to pick it up tomorrow and hopefully start putting it back together tomorrow night. if it still smokes, i might just put this thing up for sale and take a loss...i can only put so much nergy into it and im getting burnt out. Ive even got a full set of 97 runner seats that are going in it, and they look almost brand new. Would be a shame if i have to bail on the project, but im outta money.

Wow, .......... sorry man, ...
I can't remember every thread that I'm following(and sometimes I get them mixed up, lol)....but if my memory serves me correctly, you've said, "I'm SURE, 99%, that it's not a leak".... right? I know about the fuel issues and the issues you thought you were having with the head, ..... remember all that clearly.... but just couldn't remember if it was you or not that said it didn't leak at all.
Hmmmm, ..... if, in the end, it is DEFINITELY an "Oil Consumption" issue, along with the fuel you think you're losing and if it is NOT an oil leak....then I'd lean toward rings/bearings eating up the oil.(That is, considering that the head is for sure not an issue).
I can only speak for myself regarding the "should I sell or keep it".... I would try to figure it out. It's such a simple motor compared to so many, today(most of which you can't be sure will be without huge issues of their own, ya know?)... But I can also relate to being strapped, ESPECIALLY lately! lol.
NO codes? NO chance that the fuel system is dumping at a continuous, "HIGH pressure" rate or such? At one point, I took it to the Dealer, where the guy, trying to help me out, looked at it for 4 days of his spare time, trying to figure it out(for the base price...I think 90$). Of course, he couldn't, and it wound up at a Guru here in L.A., who found it out in minutes...."It's mechanical". Sometimes, you just need a professional set of second eyes, ya know?
I wish I could help more hands on, man. It would really help to rule out a stuck open or two injector/s. (Were those cleaned out/inspected when you had it apart?) The fact that you found the plugs to be soaked with fuel...that's usually telling of either, 1. Bad ignition timing/failing spark system, or 2. Screwed up injection system, in some way(injectors, etc.)
Did you put this motor back together, install the dizzy, chain kit, etc., etc.? (I know, this MIGHT only explain the fuel end, were something to be off in that sense... just curious. And I'M NOT suggesting you screwed it up, Rocker.... just trying to think on it, ya know?)

yeah i was the one who put it all back together, i didnt have the injectors checked out, im going to take the injectors to a shop here in town and have them at least tested to see if they're alright, as far as the oil consumption goes, the things i know are, it has great compression but still smokes, so i dont see how it could be the bottom end of the motor, but im clearly not an expert either so i dont know
Im picking up my head today and hopefully going to start putting it back together tonight.

Yeah, ....it's an interesting one(and frustrating for you, I'm sure!)...
Thing is, I still wonder on those compression readings...... Weren't they like 198-198-190-180 or something like that? Seems EXTREMELY high... which would, again, make me wonder, at least, as to why, ya know??
I sure hope you can get it without too much grief.

OK, SOOOOO.....i called the machine shop this morning and the guy said he forgot to order my gasket set and it was going to be another day and was gonna cost me $42, so i got pissed, lol, i called Engnbldr and asked him how much a head gasket set was, he says $36 (same brand of gaskets) so great, i go there and pickup the gaskets, by the way i did ask himj about the higher compression and he says as long as it runs fine i should be good, and could be cause by the head being resurfaced a few times, obviously creating a smaller chamber in the head and increasing compression, so im done worrying about that, i drove down to the machine shop and said they could keep their gaskets and took my head and left.....my head gasket set came with valve stem seals, so rather than trust that what those idiots said they did, im just gonna install the seals myself since i have the head off....stay tuned

Don't soak seats, drive them down to CA border and give them to me!!! hahaha.
Jk, hope you're doing well.... best wishes, man! Only so many things it can be... you'll get it. OF COURSE, ... that is IF you are able to hold out or find the cabbage to do what it takes.... I hear ya on the "can only do so much more" end.... But I hate to see it win, dang gremlins! lol. I'm so glad I just started over, man.... considering what I found after my first machinist had his shops hands on it? HOLY CRAPULA, ...talk about SUCKY! lol.

Thanks, yeah i'm sure mine is valve stem seals it has to be but of course the guy who built the engine wont admit to it. mine runs great has really good power. I have had three 22re and this one has much more pep to it. only thing is the smoking on decel and doesn't get quite as good of milage as a wish it would only bout 17 MPG.. My 1985 4x4 pickup with 225,000 on it original engine never been touched gets 20-21 consistantly

UPDATE: so i didnt get to work on my rig last night, but this morning just for grins i pulled 1 intake valve and 1 exhaust valve just to see if the machine shop actually ground the valves and seats, AND HE DIDNT WHAT A SHOCKER, but you bet ur ass i paid him for it.....since this guy is sorta my dads "friend" my dad volunteered to call him and get my money back for me, im probably gonna just take my head down to Engnbldr and have him do it right, this guy that i took my stuff to the first time only deals in cash....im sure hes not paying taxes on anything, i think im gonna report him to the state, i just dont care any more lol
