I can relate to the fuel price, my PU just socked me for a C note.

Sadly its going to have to come out, the head needs a valve job by someone who is familiar with Toyotas, and the block needs a ball hone and some cast iron rings ( just the top 2). The head will take the longest to get done. You might want to send it out on a repair exchange basis so you do not have to wait.

My 22re head is corroded through the exhaust ports so there's no saving it.

yeah i kinda figured i was gonna have to yank it, didnt really want to but oh well, can i use a 3-stone hone or does it need to be a ball hone, just askin cuz i already have a 3-stone one. DOES ANYONE RECOMMEND A MACHINE SHOP IN THE PORTLAND AREA FOR A VALVE JOB?

Three stone is for a virgin clyinder just out of a boring mill. You might get away with it. Just get the rings first, and make sure they are cast iron or moly.

ya, so i just talked to my dads friend who builds motors and has a full service shop and he said he would do my head for $125 plus parts, so i think im gonna have him do it, the whole motor is coming out this weekend, and hopefully will be going in by next weekend....if i get the head back quick enough so if i buy a complete gasket kit...is there any specific manufacturer that you recommend? Are Moly rings better than Cast and still as easy to break in?

enbldr sells kits. Whats important is the final hone. Cast iron is the easiest to seal up, moly requires a fine finish.

Beware of cheap chinese import parts. I have a cheap Chinese import clutch, yes it was cheap and the chattering, grabbing, and ornery behavior of it was included... free. Some bargain, 10 hours of labor to install and 10 hours of labor plus more $$$ for one that works right.

Ya ill definitely be gettin quality parts, I only plan on doing this one time ill probably just go with cast rings so I know they'll seat easy, but I'm gonna get a gasket kit and rod and main bearings, if its cheap enough I'm just gonna have the block honed by the machine shop so I know its done right.

Well after just 4 hours the motor is on the ground....considering I've never pulled an EFI motor and never worked on a 22RE, I think I did alright. I'll start disassembly today and hopefully be able to get to the machine shop tomorrow.

Sweet, I'll be watching, .....if ya need any "WHERE THE HECK DOES THIS GO AGAIN?" type hints, etc., just slang it, Rocker, .... you'll have plenty of help, and I'll share whatever I can(pulled and replaced twice in just over a year, second time-building all and even machining some of it myself). But get me while my old brain is fresh! ahahhaha. Jk, best wishes

if its just valve seals you wont need to pull the head. does it smoke alot when you first start it after its been sitting for a bit like if you go into the store and come out and start it does it smoke alot then clear up. you might just change the seals first, get a fitting to connect the air compressor to the sparkplug hole and that will hold the valve up, remove the spring and put on new seal.I think the rockers will slide over on the shafts. cant remember. I had a old pickup that was doing this and the seals fixed it. good luck!!

EDIT! lol......

PS> Sorry, just re-read, .... Engine's out! lol,...laughs at self, hard! Far as the rings, yeah, that's a tough one. Not sure 175-145, side by side, is "withing range", either, man, but I've had worse and it still ran and didn't smoke. So hmmmmm!

PSS> I put Hastings-USA Moly Rings in and they seated in around 300 miles. Sankai Bearings, etc.. Kinda pieced it together. Your shop you might be taking the head to will give you the low down,...but HAVE YOUR OWN info, Pop's friend or not. I learned SO MUCH from doing my last rebuild mostly myself, and speaking with the machinist as I went.... MUCH OF what I had 'THOUGHT' was either myth or just plain wrong! Helps to have guys like Skypilot around who will just tell you what they've experienced and give you threads to guide your decisions.

Got to Photobucket.com, start an account

Second, load some from your computer to an album you make up in Photobucket,>>> "22re smoking", whatever, and then click "Save to my album".

When they're loaded and you're looking at thumbnails of all the pics you uploaded(or one, doesn't matter)..... then you will put your cursor over the picture and 4 windows/options will pop up.

THE LOWEST option, IMG, is the one you "click on" and it will automatically "COPY" it, ....(it'll say "copied" really quick and then show the code again)

Once you've copied each pic, come back to this window where I'm typing and simply right click and then click "PASTE" to post the IMG code in here. You don't need to use that lil picture above the text window that looks like mountains in a tv screen(insert image) unless you're posting a Video or maybe other types of 'moving' pics.

Voila, you've posted a pic!
