I have a 1987 4runner with the stock 22re. My question is this, when i shift from one gear into the next, as i press in the cultch the engine revs up a few hundred rpms and then falls right after to normal idle rpm. Is this a normal characteristic of a 22RE or do i have a problem? Thanks, Lyndon

 

No, that's not normal. Start with the easy stuff first, you aren't depressing the clutch while your foot is still on the gas are you? If not, check out the throttle linkage and make sure it's not getting hung up.

No offense, but are you sure you are taking your foot fully off the gas? If its resting on the gas at all when you take the load off it, it will rev up a bit.

 

hey man my first guess would be your throttle would be sticking and then slowly falling back into place. does your truck idle high when first turned on? it really could be a number of things its hard to diagnose these things on the computer. but id look into throttle then maby injectors clogged, your efi could be having issues. really it could be anything check those first then let me know.

the motor still will do the same thing even if i push in the clutch while going down hill using the gears to slow down, then i dont even have my foot close to the gas so i dont think that i am not taking my foot of the gas all the way but i will check the linkage to see if it is pinched. thanks

 

slight clutch adjustment?

I used to have same symptoms on my 2nd gen with 22RE well before the clutch ever needed replacing-there was an adjustment made on the clutch to correct it. I don't know what it was, sorry- but something to do with the speed at which the clutch would release from the new gear engagement.

 

sounds like it could be a sticking dash pot valve. This is the valve that keeps the throttle from snapping closed when you let off the gass. When you push on the gass, air becomes trapped by the vacuum transmiting valve (VTV, it is within the dashpot) and holds a diaphram in the dashpot valve. When you let off of the throttle, air slowly leaks out of the VTV and the diaphram cushions the throttle to idle. It sounds like either the valve itself is sticking, or the air is not escaping fast enough.

 

hey buddy. I honestly doubt it's your clutch or your ECU. Don't start throwing money into this before you do these simple things. Check throttle cable like mentioned. Make SURE the cable where attached to throtlle body butterfly valve has slight sag in the line. that will create a lil play in the gas pedal, but will ensure the butterfly valve closes unhindered. If that doesn't fix it clean out that dash pot and make sure it functions properly. Spray some brake clean and wd40 on it and work it in and out. If that still doesn't fix your problem, i'd look to your TPS.

Definitely dash pot but honestly it doesn't even sound like it's acting up at all to me. Mine's always done that but I've been assured that it is working correctly. I did have a sticking throttle body once caused by a dirty butterfly but that had different symptoms.

 

Im with rusty on this one. Dashpot needs adjusting.
