I was hoping someone might have a tip or trick for removing the pilot bearing without my having to mail order an expensive tool, further delaying the day I start my new engine!

I'm pretty much done rebuilding my 22re, and figured I'd replace the clutch and pilot bearing while I was at it. Trouble is, nobody in my area (including Sears) stocks a tool for removing the pilot bearing from the end of the crank.

If I buy one I'll need to mail order it. Hopefully I'll only need to use it once, but should I need to mail order something, any suggestions? The stuff I Googled runs from $19.95 to over $100 bucks. I would hate to order one that does not fit the little bearing.

In the bay area of california kragens rents them. You can try putting grease behind the bearing than then beating a dowel that is a slightly smaller diameter as the hole in the bearing. This will pressurize the grease and if you are lucky force the bearing out. I would call kragens, autozone, napa, ect.. to see if you can rent a puller, the grease did not work for me.

 

i saw a thread probably close to the bottom of the page where a guy uses wet paper and shreds it up, then sticks it in the hole a little at a time and uses a socket to hit it and in turn pushes it out. Just like using grease to do the same thing, but alot less messy. Just look for the tread title something like "pilot bearing removal-how to video".
It looks easy and im getting ready to try it in a few days, if you try it, tell us if it works for you.

Please search for you questions. Pretty much everything is on here, except how to NOT get pulled over by bored cops looking for outta town plates with government stickers on a saturday morning...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

 

I did mine last week (clutch) Getting the bearing out was a PITA
I think this is the tool you are looking for. The ole "grease pressure thingy" never worked for me. I borrowed this one from a shop.

This was the first time I've ever tried this out by the way, and it works perfect. No mess, no tool rental, and can still be done with the motor still in the truck

 

didn't know about the newspaper trick and I just did mine last week. I beat a candle into the hole and used a bolt to mash it in. Worked pretty good. Newspaper would have been easier to clean up though.

 

haha, well newspaper will work good too; I actually used a print-out from the FSM about the timing cover

 

I use candle wax and a 3/8'' drive extentsion to hammer the wax into the hole. . little birth day candles work great.
