I have an 86 4Runner that being changed auto to manual and is being lifted, i will also be running 37'' tires. I have a downey header that i will be installing along with a complete new exhaust, i was also thinking about getting an engine builder 261C cam also. will i get a noticable gain in power with these upgrades ?.

yeah, you'll get an increase in power, maybe ~20-30 hp. the 37"s will kill it off quite easily unless you regear. installing the cam means removing the cylinder head bolts, so while you're risking damaging the head gasket, you might as well go in and clean up the pistons, rings and cylinders.

 

I already have a AFM (not installed yet) and was going to make a custom air intake, i also already have a downey header, and im still trying to decide what size exhaust to go with, engine builder recomends 2'' pipe from the header back, but it seems that most people go with 2 1/4'' pipe, im not sure what size pipe to go with, recomendations on this would help. from everything ive read the 261C cam seems like a good upgrade, but what i would really like to do is get an engine builder street/rv head that has over size valves and have it ported, that would get me the most performance.

 

Remove Motor and replace with SB350

Or deal with the fact you have a bullet proof, go anywhere, beat the heal outta slow ass motor that likes the red line

I put a downey header, 2 1/4" pipe, no cat and a hushpower muffler with the same cam and it sounds great! Didnt really notice much difference in power but I also regeared to 529s and put 36" on at the same time. 22re is plenty powerful for a crawler...just learn to drive it and make sure you are geared properly

 

there is no substitute for proper gears to make any engine feel more powerful.

but maybe a 4.3 gm v6 would be a decent compromise in power and economy

WOW....Just WOW. GREAT clip. I was wondering to myself what was wrong with your rig until the camera paned to the start perspective and then said holy chit!!!! Still can't help but wonder if you had a littl more weight on the a$$ end if you might get a little better traction. ( which appeared to be your only issue BTW )

I recently had a rebuild to my '86. I also wanted the EB 261 cam but ended up with a Crane cam that appears to be a 268 per the spec sheet. When I first got it back, I can't say there was a big difference. Yeah, it ran better, but not significantly. Shortly thereafter, I added an LCE exhaust which is 2 1/4 from the header back. That really opened her up nicely. It's obviously all just my seat of the pants opinion, but I pull hills better and can actually pass people now.

I decided against going crazy with the head because the 22re is so reliable and IMO the possible gains aren't worth it. Bigger valves, ported head, ported TB all means more air and fuel will get dumped in. More power but less economy. I just didn't personally feel the small power gain would be worth the potential extra trouble not to mention cost. Some would disagree with me and they may be right for themselves, but for me the truck does what I want it to do efficiently and reliably.

 

Oh and I forgot about the tranny. I don't know any of this for fact but have "read" that autos rob some of the power from performance. Don't know how true that is but it would be interesting if you could do your changes one at a time to evaluate the result. Do the tranny and see how it feels, then the exhaust and see how it feels, then the cam...etc.

And I assume you are regearing for 37's, otherwise...

What kinda air pressure you running. On those slick climbs I run 5-8psi makes a hell of a difference. I got a cheap freight habor 12v (to battery) compressor so I don't have to drive 20 miles to a gas station.

I was running street pressure (because I was lazy, about 15-16lbs) Those SXs sidewalls dont usually start showing flex until about 3 or 4 psi
