fix it when it goes. at 200k the motor has to be showing its age. rebuild the whole thing when it blows, but then again it may run for a very long time before it goes.

Good call on removing the belts. By removing the main accessory belt I have traced the noise down to the power steering pump pulley. The weird thing is this pulley made no noise before the head refresh. That leads me to believe it may have to do with how tight I made the belt after all this. I'm not able to make it very loose, though. To get the belt off I had to remove the bolt that holds the tensioner pulley in place. Loosening up the adjusting bolt all the way didn't give me enough slack to slip the belt off the pullies. Any ideas? I'm pretty sure the power steering pulley bearings are alright.

Edit: Well I guess it could also be the water pump, fan or idler pulley since they are run by the same belt, but the noise definately sounds like it's coming from the area of the power steering and it definatley stops when I remove that belt.

In case you didn't watch the video, the sound starts about 3 seconds after I start the engine, and it goes waaaaaa pause waaaaaa pause waaaaaaa, etc. Thats about the best I can describe it lol.

Anyone? I need to get this running before we get more snow. I'm tired of driving my GTO in crappy weather lol.

The cheapest and easiest method would be to replace the idler bearing first. If that fails to remedy the problem, then the water pump would be next on the list.

I just recently replaced the idler bearing and it only cost $10.50 at the dealer and 20 min to remove and replace.

Or spray that bearing with wd-40.. If it stops, there's the rub...

I figured out it is the idler pulley. I will get a new bearing soon.

Scratch the above post. While the idler pulley did seem like it got quieter when I gave it some lithium, it was actually the ps pump cause I was low on fluid. I figured it out cause I backed out of the garage (she's finally running!) and turned the wheel and it groaned like a s.o.b. So I pulled back in the garage and added fluid up the mark and now she is quiet! Thanks guys.

Hi All, this is my first post here. I'm fairly new to toyotas and to watercooled motors in general, only having done much work on old vw's.
I have a 22re 4 runner, it supposedly had a recon motor about 2 years / 15000km ago. I've not long spent $1000 on new rad and water pump as I was travelling and stuck and had not tools.
Now after parking it up for a month, I'm running it and getting water in oil and viceversa. I guess the hg has gone so this post is v useful. I was wondering, as I'm a long way from home and have no tools if anybody can recall any specialist or different tools I'll need other than a basic socket set. Ie do I need any deep sockets or unusual sizes before I get started as I'll be buying / borrowing everything from scratch.
Cheers guys, thanks for the great info so far!
