I have a 88 toyota 4x4 with a 22re engine. When you accelerate it cough and sputters for about 10 seconds then take off like nothing is wrong until you shift gears then does it all over again.

Start with the simple stuff, replace the fuel filter and check for vacuum leaks, and see if that fixes the problem.

I have replaced the cap rotor plugs wires fuel filter and checked for vaccum leaks still does the same thing could it be the tps

If i shift at higher rpm it is better unless i am going up hill or truck is under load

I checked the tps and it test out fine. any other suggestions could it be the fuel pump

have you checked yoru spark plug gap(s) and verified your coil primary resistance is within tolerance?

I am new here, but my 89 22RE is doing nearly the same thing. It starts of well, then the longer you drive it the worse it sputtres and coughs at highway speeds
It sat for a few years a barn. Could it be the fuel filter getting trashed up or a bad injector?
I already replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I put new plugs in and checked the gap when I installed them. I haven't check the coil resistance does anyone know how to do that and what is the tolerance suppose to be.

Butters it could be I have already changed my filter and that didn't help my situation. I even took out the cat of the exhast and am running a staight exhast with a muffler thinkintg that the exhast might be plugged and causing it not to run right

Checked the tps checked out ok how do you check the afm.

put on new afm now it acts like not getting fuel shouldn't there be 12 volts at the fuel pump. I checked that and there isn't I tested with a test light to see if the infectors were pulsing and they are not. could it be the ECU?

Try the fuel pump test jumper:

And check the injector wire splices (about 6" up inside the wiring harness) for bad splices, that can cause the injectors not to fire.

I tried the fuel pump test jumper and that didn't work. I was wondering if the fuel pump should have voltage to it when the key is on. That still makes me wonder if it could be the ECU. any more suggestions.

The fuel pump should have voltage when cranking the engine and when the engine is running: the fuel pump is controlled by the Circuit Opening Relay (COR) which in turn is controlled by the ignition switch when cranking and the AFM once the engine is running.

When you replaced the AFM, any chance you bumped, tugged or otherwise disturbed the wiring / plugs to the igniter or distributor?

No I checked the plug wire and I have fire. I put a test light on the injectors to see if the were pulsing and they are not that is why I was thinking of the ECU

that doesn't mean a connector isn't making good connection between the igniter and ecu though.

have you pulled trouble codes?
