22re died NEED HELP
greetings all
i was driving down the freeway today and the truck just quit...made a little thud noise but then just rolled to a stop....i checked some things and the car will run on starting fluid....the AFM was tampered with before i owned the truck and most all the ignition system has less then 10K on it (cap rotor wires and plugs). the truck was running poorly before and seemed to have a small knocking problem under load. am i ballpark on the AFM being the problem? anybody else have this problem? i check the relays for the fuel pump and they were working fine but i couldnt hear the pump cuz its kinda noisy on the side of the highway.
any help would be great

You don't have a MAF, yo have an AFM, and yes, that could be the trouble, especially if it was tampered with. They're pretty delicate once you open them up. It could be a hole in the tube between teh AFM and the throttle body too, that'll kill a truck real fast...Did you check your fuses and fusible links? If the EFI fuse, for example, failed that could do it...there's a LOT of things. You said the ignition system was pretty new, so I'd concentrate on the fuel system. Pump,, relays, fuses, etc. Make sure you have fuel going to the injectors, and that they're pulsing properly...

my bad...AFM not MAF...sister was in an accedent and i was going to see her and thats when the truck died...brain isnt on today...thank you for the correction
as far as fuel system...new filter about 50mi ago but yes i will check for pressure and all that other crap...i checked all the fuses i could see and they were good. also, there is no crack or holes in the air inlet piping.

As long as the fuel system is fully functional, I would put my money on the AFM, in that case. Like I said, they're pretty delicate inside, and if someone had been in there messing with it...There are tests you can do to it with a multimeter to tell you if it's good or not.
Try these tests, the ohm meter tests about halfway down the page. And here is another...
Hope that helps...

Glad to help. That's what we're all here for. There's a HUGE wealth of experience in here, and most are more than happy to share. Keep us up to date on how the troubleshooting is going, maybe we can come up with more ideas as you get more information on the problem...

To expand on 2ToyGuy's reference to the AFM:
All intakes are finicky and rely on a completely sealed system, i.e., I've experienced engine shutdown merely because of a loose intake tube/runner.
Admittedly, we're down playing what could be a potentially serious problem with either the ignition system or the engine itself (no one ever wants to admit that it's as bad as it actually is, aka, "denial"), in that you mentioned hearing "...a little thud noise...", which points to a couple serious possibilities by "sound" diagnosis alone.
Good luck and keep us posted..., sorry to hear about the sis, hope she's o'kay.

thank you for the concern...all is good shes ok..just a little shakin up
i think i might know what the "thud" i herd was...when the whole thing happened i was accelerating the truck...the engine shut down and i think the transfer of power from the engine driving the wheels to the wheels driving the engine through semi old u-joints is what made the noise....i think. i opened the valve cover and everything "looked" ok....ill find out more as i go
