what to do w/ a busted 2nd gen

Ok.... a friend of mine has a busted 2nd gen, apparently the motor has decided to go south. now since she doesn't want to throw in a new motor nor does she want to spend any so she's gonna give it to me!!!! yay i think.

so what should i do? i know dumping a 3.4 will be $ and i already have one project (my own 4r) so i dunno if i really want to take up on this task. should i keep it (and slowly rebuild it over the next 1-2yrs) or dump it / part it?

the 4r spec is a 3.0 2wd 95 blue (dark) -not sure if it's factory? does have the stripe so i'm guessing it is? the body looks like it's in great shape in and out. i believe it's 3.0 but i've never checked so i dunno. auto btw.

would make a nice trail rig i suppose if i had the right $$$

I'd say part it. I guess you could eventually do a SAS. If you just replaced the motor and sold it, you'd be lucky to recoup what you put into it since it's a 2wd. How many miles are on it?

If you have space to store it, I would keep it for now, see what happens. At least finish your 4th Gen first!!!

Hey Lance,
You can give Bernie jr a call 310-518-5839. He's the parts guy for Toyota. He runs a autosalvage place. He might buy the truck whole. Save you the hassle of taking it apart and keeping what ever doesn't sell in the yard....hehe
He's in Wilmington. He should be able to come pick it up with a flat bed.

2wd + auto = dump.

IMO, Its not worth all the extra money to swap that many parts...unless you already have a 3.4, tanny, solid f axel, and all the "kits" that go along with it laying around.

See what the guy from the salvage place will give you for it. If it's decent, then let him take it and take your friend out to dinner. Nothing fancy, but just as a thank you.

I like the auto, but 2WD is of no value IMO unless you are making it into a Prerunner.

Check to see what exactly is wrong with it first. Could be something simple to fix, but don't tell them that. Get it cheap and fix it and then sell it for more.

That's what I'm doing. A friend of mine told me her 92 Accord had the auto tranny go out, so she bought a new car and was going to sell her old one to the junkyard, so I offered her what the junkyard would pay her, $150. Took it home, and found out it was just the cable that runs from the shifter to the tranny. So for $25 and an hour or 2 of labor,I have a good running 92 Accord that I'm going to turn around and sell for a LOT more than $150!

How Much

I don't care if it's a 2wd, If you're gonna salvage it, I may be interested in taking if off your hands for you. Let me know I've been looking for a 2wd.

a true friend would tell them that it was an easy fix and then split the profits (less the original purchase, in this case $150).

as for the 2wd 4runner... if you have the time, part it out, im sure theres lots of 2nd gens on here that need miscelaneous parts. (then sell it to the salvage)

I'd be interested in the 4runner if you'd like to sell it whole, and cheap (donate). I need more experience on working on motors and what not. A donation to my education would be great. I would even be willing to offer a few $$$ for it if she's worth it. Just and idea and poorly planned plea to help myself learn more about mechanical repairs on my yota.

Thanks for considering

What I meant was

Sorry Morphine, I did'nt want to step on any toes or start any bidding wars here. What I meant was, I would buy it for more than the salvage dude would give you for it and that way take it off your hands. My wife wants a new car and she absolutely loves my 4Runner, so she wants my 4Runner and she wants me to get a new car or truck and give her my 4Runner. Two things though, the budgets kinda tight right now and I love my 4Runner and I don't really want to part with it just now. My thinking was that if I found her another 2nd Gen. she would go for that...?

The truck is sitting at the shop in Glendora until the 4th of July weekend. Feel free to check out the 4runner in person if you wish as I don't have time to transport it until the weekend anyway.

From the brief conversation with the shop owner, the oil pan has a nice big hole in the bottom and apparently the bottom end is done. Top half and the tranny should be good btw. Odo I believe is 140k. Body is in excellent shape. I saw the truck a few weeks ago and it's in great shape. Inside is super clear. The only work that it needs obviously is the motor.

If anyone is still interested, I'll pass the word by. PM me anytime.

Don't be knocking on the 2WD. For a daily driver it's great. A lot more pep than my 4WD. Plus no one knows it's a 2WD.

Finally got the truck last night. As it was being dropped off I did a quick check and was only able to find a small dime size crack in the oil pan. Not sure if that means it's a rod that went thru. The rest of the truck looks great. The truck has been sitting outside for awhile so it's abit dirty (dust n all) but the truck looks great

I'll have photos up tomorrow morning when I get up. Will post it shortly in the Sale section and have the link posted here a well.

Don't have a firm price yet though but I'll try to find out asap for all of ya that are interested in the truck.

eBay it for a quick buck. My wife's '92 civic took a dive on us. I needed to get rid of it fast as we were in the process of moving to AZ. Put it on eBay...made an easy $500. All the salvage places we called said they'd take it away for free, but that was it.

Parting out can be a pain if you dont have time or the room...you'll be left over with a bunch of junk no one wants and have to get rid of.
