22r fuel mileage problem

22r fuel mileage problem

Hey guys,
Sorry that this has been asked several times but I'm stumped.

Got a 88 22r 4x4, 28" tires that gets 14mpg driving nicely. My daily route is only 10 miles total and a lot of stop and go. But I figured I should get way better than my 550hp diesel truck that gets 12mpg....

Just did plugs, wires, cap, rotor, vacuum advance, fuel filter, valve adjustment, filters, repacked wheel bearings, vacuum lines, stock timing, new cat, 170k miles.

My aap isn't leaking, but I will replace it regardless. What could be my problem??? Could I adv the timing to get better mileage? Let me know some tips and tricks.
It is the California model.

I have about the same commute as you in the winter I get around 10mpg because of the added idle time and the hubs being locked in.

With the 22rec engine and 5 speed then the weight of tools and things seems to keep adding up in my case.

After your tune up tire pressure and the extra weight you carry around something to look at.

At your mileage if the stock carb has not been rebuilt it might be something to think about

Yea maybe I need a new carb. My truck is light. I don't carry any extra weight. Hopefully it's something small

My truck lost around 4 mpg, and it turned out to be the door that diverts hot air from the exhaust manifold into the air filter housing . It was pulling hot air all the time , after plugging it off my mileage went back up, and I have not notice any problems by not having it plugged in .

I don't see much of a problem here; I get 15mpg on my basically stock '88 4runner 5spd around town & work.

So mine is by no means original(any more), but it never got more than 20mpg except if I really did the hyper-mile drive methodology. Yup; once turning the engine off down hill and other super economy tricks I did get 33mpg but I had to work for that.

I just put an overhauled head on a replacement used block w/ a Delta Cams "260?? grind" w/ 3mm overbore TB and really got down on the lash adjustment and its only getting about 16 to 17 mpg currently. ( connecting rod out the side of the block and into the starter @338,000 miles) Current short block has 200,000 miles on it.

What youre getting doesn't sound out of line to me. My 90 v6 pickup, this time of year with winter gas and more idling, gets 15. Sometimes a little better, but not much better this time of year. I also live in a small town with lots of stop and go. I do get a lot better mileage in the summer and Ill bet you will to.

I still get 18-20 this time of year. No hubs locked in. And I don't drive it like its a fire breathing monster. More of a 80 year old dog. Just drive it nice check tire pressure. Rebuild or replace your carb. What kind of plugs, cap, and wires did you use? Denso or ngk seem to be the preferred brands

10 mile commute!! Stop and go and complaining about 14mpg?? If it's hurting you that bad look into a good bicycle or scooter.
My trip to work and back is almost 80 miles.
A carb rebuild or replacement might help some but probably not much. FWIW when accelerating from a stop in my 5 cylinder my mileage is about 3-5mpg. So if you spend most of your time accelerating your overall mileage is going to be way down.

Not complaining just wondering. I will agree and say that the commute is probably the killer. Just thought I'd ask because I got a friend who has the same truck and almost the same commute and avg 19mpg.

Have you changed the fuel filter? And do you and your fiend have the same driving style. How you accelerate is a huge factor in your millage. Especially in stop and go. Do you keep on the bumper of the car in front of you or keep a little space and let it idle in 1st?

You and your friend have the same driving habits .

You both drive the same ??

In the olden days in my misguided youth in the sixties we used to see who could get the best mileage in our Camaro`s with the LS6 454

We taped a spoon on the dash and drove with a raw egg in the spoon one got real smooth pulling out after a few broken eggs.

Very similar driving styles. But I did drive a lot today and did a bit of wheeling and calculated 17mpg. Which I'd a plus. All I did was block of the exhaust \intake port and seemed to help alot
