22r engine recommendation
I have a 86 22r with a "knock", sounds like a main bearing...I'm going to by new or reman engine. who do you recommend that I get the engine from? I see a few on ebay but not to sure about that...Give me your thoughts...I have also spoke with a local machine shop about having mine rebuilt...also would you have the RV cam installed? Thanks for help...

I recomend you DIY best way IMO! Cant justify the cost of new or reman. Ive heard only bads about Ebay motors.
Take it out tear it down first, see whats really wrong and go from there!
Good luck!

Just an idea but you might want to check your timing chain, tensioners etc. If the chain guids are broken then the engine will knock, and can be mistaken for rod knock. It is common for them to knock upon start up and it sound rather prominent as the oil pressure actuated cam chain tensioner comes up to pressure. Eliminate this as a possiblity before you spend the cash for a whole engine. This recently happened to my future brother in law. Sold him an 87 4 runner. He called saying he was hearing rod knock and he was going to have to put new rods in etc. I said it might be the timing chain etc. He said no he took it to a guy and the mechanic said it sounded like rods. I ask if the guy was familiar with the 22re. Guy wasn't. Took it to someone who was and he said it was normal 22re timing chain noise.

I'm also thinking about DYI... It doen't sound like the normal timing chain sound...You here it when first start up & when the gas is pressed & you let off you hear this "deep knock" on bottm end...
Here's the story I bought it from a friend who just put this 88 model 22r about a year ago. he got the thing stuck, broke passenger front axle & gear shifter...when he pulled it out & got it home he started it up & that is when the "knock" was first heard..I feel like he was hot rodding when he got it stuck & maybe spun a bearing or something...I made him an offer as it seat in his barn and he took it...i fixed the axle & gear shifter drive it around my hood super clean & has new brakes and tires on it...

I guess you know to keep track of the order of the rods/caps and bearing caps when you remove them... also remove the little brass block-drain fitting before the machine shop tanks the block. Beware some shops remove the block plugs (down by the oil pan) and similar plugs on the crank shaft, as well as the head alignment pins, and oil pan mounting studs..... make sure they put them back properly.... Referring to the FSM is good when your're reassembling the engine.
