22r=22re?

I have an '88 pickup with a 22RE which needs a total rebuild. I found a low mileage 22R engine out of an '84 pickup and I was wondering if I could use the 22R block/head with the 22RE intake/electrical stuff.

Has anyone done this or heard about it being done?

The head from the 84 will need the bosses for the EFI intake manifold, and a non-EFI head WILL NOT have them. The answer, unfortunately, is no.

I was reading through the following links and it looks like late '83 and 84+ 22R heads have bosses for the EFI stuff.

umm, 84 is a goofy year, they have the older style head/block BUT the head IS drilled and tapped for the EFI intake, the block doesn't have the knock sensor hole, but you can weld a nut on the motor mount to attach the KS....

Heres proof, my 84 4runner converted to EFI

Superjoe, so you've done it? Any problems you ran into or was it quick and painless except for welding the nut on the motor mount?

ya i did it to my 84, everything bolted up fine, just make sure the motor that you getting is drilled for the EFI intake, just in case its not really an 84 motor, the only thing you will have to change is the knock sensor location, i just took the sensor to a hardware store and found a nut that threaded on, then i welded the nut to the front of the passenger side motor mount, since your truck is already EFI you wont have any of the wiring hurdles that i had to overcome, other than the knock senor it should be a direct swap
