Exclamation 1st gen Runners w/sunroof

Can someone tell me the dimensions on their Runner's sunroof glass? I came accross a nice deal on a brand new aftermarket sunroof w/hardware. There are 2 sizes. So I can see which is a closer fit. Thanks

If you're installing an aftermarket sunroof , why is the OEM sunroof size important?

Thanks 4crawler!!

The 2 sizes are 15 1/4" x 29 3/8".

And, 17 1/4" x 33 1/2"...I'm thinking the latter.

Does anyone have pics of what their sunroof looks like on the inside? Just trying to get an idea of how I'm going to have to do this.. And of course their will be a write up as well.

Thanks

I wonder how hard it would be to install a sunroof on a second gen?

I installed one (flip up style) on my old VW and it was not too hard. Just lay out the template on the roof, cut out the opening in the sheet metal. Repeat for the headliner then put in the frame and glass.

Not hard at all. IIRC, there's no wiring to get in the way unless you're going back far enough that relocating the light is necessary. All kits come with instructions.

Ok, so I bought a sunroof kit on eBay. It's brand new and comes w/the hardware. It's a 17 1/4" x 33 1/2". Here's some pics.

When i did mine in my f150 you popped out part of the box it came in to use as a template for cutting the hole in the roof....looks like a pain to get the hole exactly right just using the sunroof frame..

Make sure you measure like 100 times then cut once lol that would suck, I think I saw a thread about some guy cutting too large a hole in his roof and it wasn't an easy error to fix...

Thanks for the pics pepsi. Do you remember what you used to cut into the roof? And how about from in the cab? To not tear up the liner so much..

Yeah, I read about that guy too. He had to buy a bigger sunroof. Ouch! Yeah, this is my biggest mod yet, so I'm for sure going to measure many many times before I cut. And of course there will be a writeup.

I'd use a box cutter to cut the head liner, and a plasma cutter (ideally, but not necessary), you could use a reciprocating saw or something as well.

If I remember correct, the factory sunroofs have a feature that allows the glass to slide back into the head liner. Do the aftermarket sunroofs have this as well?

I think all the 1st gen sunroofs were pop-up type, at least the one on my '85 is and it is original.

Why dont you just take your top off?

Never understood the need for aftermarket sunroofs in 1st gen 4runners....

But since you asked...

That is correct, 84-88 trucks and 84-89 4runners were pop up only. Since it was a 2dr, and had a removeable top, there would be nowhere for the glass to slide to.
