1st Gen Runner E Locker questions

i have a 88 4runner V6 automatic
i picked up a 2000 4runner elocker
i have a spare diff housing i will be modifying than transfer axle shafts over

so far everything is as planned but one thing came up but i can seem to figure out. i was told i need to use 2nd gen runner axle shafts since they are longer.

anyone that have installed elockers on a 1st gen runner wanna help out
i have read alot of info on how to do this but i have only seen 2nd gen and 3rd gen runners doing the elocker mod. cant seem to find anyone with a 1st gen runner doing elockers. i have googled for any 1st gen runner with elockers and cant seem to find any

after lots of research it seems that the 2nd gen axles in the coil prung rears are slightly longer and might prevent the breaking of the side gears that some of the elocker conversions are having. there is a huge thread on pirate about this. I plan on using the coil sprung shafts. Some have run the 1st gen shafts with no issues but as easy as they are to get I will change mine. I have my front axle built with regeared elocker installed and ready for SAS just need 1 more elocker for the rear now.

after hours and hours of looking around i found this
are both you guys running 1st gen axle. i dont plan on doing any heavy off road stuff. mainly trails and the locker is mainly for snow. but i wont know till i get out this summer and see if a locker will be need on dirt and baby rocks

To summarize:

On a leaf sprung 86+ housing with a 4cyl 3rd the 633mm long leaf sprung shafts will give you full spline engagement. Putting a e-locker in the same housing with leaf sprung shafts will result in pretty close to full engagement on the right side and the left side ends up being around 7mm short of full spline engagement.

Running a 7mm longer coil sprung shaft on the left side with a e-locker in a leaf sprung housing does not seem to be a bad idea if you have one.


The curious part is that the ~7mm gap from full spline engagement on the left side with a e-locker would seem to be there even in the factory configuration.

I have 5 or more buddies that all used to have e lockers. They sold them.
For the money you can have an ARB and not ruin your housing, not have to worry about electrical or the motor getting damaged, and not have the almost full engagement issue.

I am not a fan of OEM e lockers unless it's just a daily driver and it came stock. Too many other better options for a trail rig.

Aside from the ARB, can you elaborate on what "other better options" there are?

A spool/lincoln Lock is more reliable, but then there is the driveabiity issue...

im sure arb is way better but im not doing any rock crawling. most guys that rock crawl dont use selected lockers anyways. welding or spooled. plus alot are also trailer queens.
im sure you friends does alot of off roading abuse compared to what im doing.

edit. i know arb is better* it was built for hardcore 4x4. stock elocker is just when you need it which is my plan

I think every option has its ups and downs, I have heard of some of the arbs having issues. I have seen people eho have had the elocker and abuse the heck out of it with no issues. I only plan to run 35s so shouldnt be an issue. if you want to run 40s then there might be some issues. its also a heck of a lot better than what i have now..NOTHING!!!
