Question 1988 22re timing problems from rebuild

I have recently completed the install of a fresh 22re with 261 cam from engnbldr. All marks line up appropriately (crankshaft pully, cam gear, dist.)but I still can't get it timed right. I have tried jumping the T/E terminal as shown in the manuals. I have moved the distributor one tooth each way but it will only run smooth at about 30 BTDC (Way off). I am running out of ideas on how to solve this issue. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Verify TDC - meaning the piston is at the top of the cyliner. Verify correct part of the stroke, both rocker arms should be loose on #1. Verify that your distributor is pointing approximately to the #1 cylinder...

Is your firing order right?

Did the timing change when you jumped the terminals? If not, troubleshoot the TPS, it could be stuck. That was my problem and my timing jumped around alot and ran best when way advanced like yours. Good Luck, we're all pullin' for ya

jumping the termals is tricky the idle will change a little
keep playing with jumper til it does

Tdc/tps

Thanks for the input. I will certainly varify tdc when i get off tom. I have been looking at information for the TPS (testing/adjusting/etc). That hopefully will be the fixer (an easy 100.00 to solve my headache).

Well I was messing around with the TPS and forgot to plug it back in. I fired the engine right up and adjusted the timing without any difficulty (jumped). It idled fine and then I killed the motor. It fired right up and ran pretty damn good other than high idle (which was expected, havent adjusted idle). Then I plugged the TPS back in and it won't even start. Unplugged the TPS and nothing. Im thinking a new sensor is the ticket. Any input is appreciated thanks.

ok, so now i've changed the tps (it was rather dirty inside). We have made tons of adjustments in slight increments with it and now I think it is a matter of getting the right combination with the tps, dist., and idle. With the new tps is definately runs smoother but we still haven't been able to line out the idle.

Well for an update. My problems included a swapped vacuum line, and a loose ground wire. Also I was trying to idle down to much and with a performance cam the vacuum drops from 22inches to 15inches which jacks with a lot of other things (including A/C idle.) Things are now running good with a higher idle.
