1987 Toyota - Has anyone replaced the chrome trim style windshield with a gasket
I was curious if anyone on here has gotten rid of the chrome trim style windshield that is notorious for rusting and replaced it with a gasket style windshield?
I talked to my local Safelite Glass and they claimed that they will not change a glue-in windshield to a gasket style windshield. They said the would glue in a new windshield and add a rubber molding strip to the edge of the windshield that would overlap the gap and eliminate the chrome trim. I want something that looks good and does not allow moisture in behind it.
I suspect Safelite doesn't know what they are talking about as far as your truck is concerned. As far as I know the original configuration is a gasketed windshield, not a glue-in. I also suspect that they have almost no idea on how to install that type, as they mostly deal with more modern vehicles that are glue-in type. Gasketed windshield installing is a little bit of an art. If you want some idea about how this is done, have a look at this:
I don't want to knock anyone but Toyhead's prices are always way too high. You can get a good quality gasket for about half that price. Just search "1987 toyota pickup windshield gasket" on Google & you'll see a lot of options. Nearly all the gaskets you'll see are made in Thailand. I've had nothing but good experiences with Thai-made parts; the quality is quite good. I've never done a replacement myself with one of these gaskets, but have heard & seen many reports of people doing it with no issues.
If you don't think you can do the job yourself, try to find a local shop that works on classic cars, hot rods, or an auto glass shop that has experience with large truck windshields (like box trucks or semi tractors). The classics & hotrods are often older vehicles that use the gasketed windshield, so they would know how to install one. Even a lot of modern large trucks still use them as well.
Thanks for the reply. I suppose I am hesitant to try something unless I know some folks have had success with a specific product. Safelight mentioned that they install gasket type windshields especially in semi trucks. However this guy said that they would only install the same type of windshield. He did say another shop may do it besides Safelight. So I will see if anyone replies with any specific success stories before I buy a gasket.
1987 4Runner was glue-in. Glue-ins less likely to pop out in an accident.
Most companies won't alter the vehicle where safety features are concerned, and the windshield would fit this category. It's just not worth the liability if anyone was injured in an accident.
But yes, if you call around, you'll eventually find a shop willing.
Our Samurai had a weatherstrip seal, and I easily took it out and reinstalled when it got painted. A hot day helps a lot.

I guess I didin't think about that. I would still opt for the gasket type though. But that makes sense.
when i got a windshield for my 88 4runner the glass shop used 1225 moulding. it is for a chevy van. it comes ln a length for the dw1225 windshield or is available in bulk. the moulding attaches around the windshield and butts to the inside of the opening. it gives a way cleaner look. the only downside is there is nothing sitting on the cowl to hold it down but has not been a problem. a good glass shop will understand what i am trying to describe.
