Question 1987 Pickup Dome Light Issues

When switched to the door position my dome light doesn't turn on.... I don't think that it's the door switch because the buzzer still works. The dome light will turn on if I turn it to the on position so I know it gets power. Has anyone else had this issue?

Probably your light switch. Take it off (just a few screws and a plug) and clean the contacts. Make sure the ball & spring are working smoothly and that the ball is making good contact at each selection of the lever. A little dielectric grease where the ball makes contact in each position helps the smoothness when sliding the lever.

Awesome! I’ll give it a try tonight! Would just a toothbrush work or should I use like dish soap or something?

EDIT: my brain totally skipped over the fact that the buzzer works...

I would use a wire brush. But don't do it while plugged in, that will certainly blow the fuse.

Well, I unplugged the dome light and cleaned up the contacts, but it still didn't work. I then opened the kicker panel to see if there was anything obviously wrong with the wiring or the fuses. Nothing seemed wrong, but the dome light ended up not working at all Ill have to check with a voltmeter tomorrow!

The dome light may have to be screwed back in to get it's ground circuit. That's how my old Isuzu truck was, not sure if your 87 grounds that same way? A multi-meter will tell what's going on.

Yes, for forced-on not dependent on door open.

What is an illumination package?

Glad you asked.. The illumination package is lights on the doors that show other drivers your door is open. You almost certainly don't have these if you have the non-molded flat vinyl door skins.

if you have the key in the ignition and you open the door does the key reminder buzzer go off?
If not, someone may have unplugged it, and that would cut the circuit for the dome light working with the door setting. Drivers would often ask us if we could disable the key buzzer and we'd tell them about the trade off. If the buzzer was unplugged you could still manually turn the dome light on.
