1987 extra-cab 4x4 motor knocking...

ok, so i just picked up this nice white toyota with about 160,000 on the clock. its stock and in GREAT condition almost cherry other than the knock(which at first i thought it just needed to be timed and have the valves adjusted), and the fact that my suspension needs adjustment because the tires get warn in under 2 months aparently and the front end sits a bit too high.

i heard this suspension problem might be a "camber adjustment" which i have no idea what that means..

heres a few pics of the truck.

interior with aftermarket bucket seat/2 seater with cup holders. i dont know what they are out of.

So i got done adjusting the valves, REDOING the timing chain cover gasket because the last guy in this truck didnt have any idea that the cover needed anything more than ultra-grey sealer.. lol, and test driving the truck, it lost power and died. i tried a few more times and finally i realized that the bolt that holds the distributor in had stripped out the head where it tightens into.. no i didnt overtorque the bolt, it was barely tight at all when i last left it.

now at this point i know i have to either rebuild or swap motors, so i look to my 22re out of an 86 (one year earlier) that i have sitting waiting for my other project. im wondering if the best thing i could do is just swap out the whole motor(minus the efi stuff obviously).

that my question guys, is this an easy swap. can an 86 long block be swapped inplace of the 87 thats knocking?

hope its a yes. and thanks in advance!

Yes, the 86 22RE will work in your 87 truck.

and for the camber adjustment just take it to les schwabs and theyll adjust it for 55 dollars or 85 depending if it needs just a 2 wheel alignment of 4 and if no adjustment is made it is free.

just took it to them and they said it needed a list of new parts in the suspension(i was going to get it alligned) over 1000 bucks later i need a new torsion bar, a some other things i dont remember but ill list the quote later or just scan it and show you guys. maybe you guys can show me what all of it means. preferably with pics.

i wont let them jew me thats why i didnt pay out. lol. im going to either sell it or learn how to work on suspension. about the only thing i know on that ifs stuff is the shocks.

also.. whats a cv axle. i just remembered thats another thing that is gone apparently in the front. and sway bars are needing replaced because of a bushing?

ill admit i didnt look at the truck all night after i got it back to see what all the parts were. so do you guys think that buying the parts(where???) and doing it myself is worth it. or sell it and get a little extra cash? and whats it worth. i put it on for 3000 waiting for typical craigslist lowballers.

also. the motor seems REALLY gutless with the auto tranny. like it doesnt want to stay on when i put it in gear sometimes and also it has like NO low end torque until i floor it and it hesitates then takes off. my 4runner with a 5 speed burns out easily in first and this thing barely takes its own weight till about 2 seconds after i hit the floor.

any thoughts?

haha. ok, i know les schwab is honest but you guys also have to make a profit so im going to go out on a limb here and say that the parts would be less than half of that cost and im sure other than the allignment(you need a special machine right?) i can do the work myself.

but i probably will sell it. i would take 2500 if anyone is in or around salem oregon
