1987 4runner cold start issues

Hey there. I have a 87 runner with a 22re.

It has a hell of a time starting in the cold mornings.the engine will literally turn over for 5-8 second before it fires and instantly dies. This gets repeated 2-4 times before it actually stays running. And even then it struggles until it is warmed up. I have tested the cold start tonight sensor and the cold start injector. Both are working.
Any other ideas?
New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, 02 sensor, pcv, etc

Even if it passes a test, sometimes it will have hard water build up on the Cold Start Injector Sensor Timing Switch. I have had luck just cleaning them.

The one in the center is cleaned and the one on the bottom is dirty. Just use a brass wire brush to get it cleaned. Somecan hae a thick crust on them. If I recall right, you need to use thead sealer when reinstalling them or I use it for myself.

Just how did you test your cold start injector??

I really hope you installed a new fuel filter??

Mouse nest in the intake .

Has this ever started good or has this problem been around since the rebuild

What kind of voltage does your battery have when starting.

poor connections at the coil igniter at the ground connections.

Poor quality tune up parts.

Pulled the injector out and when the engine was cold had someone turn it over and it was spraying gas out.
New filter, the sensor was tested with the correct ohm range. It started fine before the cold weather really hit. All the parts are connected fine and are good. I literally just bought a new battery and will try that tonight when I go to leave work. I also just sprayed the throttle body out and cleaned out the 3 little vacuum lines on top of it,

Testing Cold Start Injector ON Truck.

I'm currently having hard-starts, too. CSI timer switch and Cold Start Injector resistance readings at various temps are good. However, I haven't performed this test like you have, yet.

I want to do simple tests that require minimal disassembly first.

When you pulled the CSI out, did you have to plug the port? Did it not make a mess as the injectors sprayed into the throttle body?

Should I disable power to standard main injectors by maybe disconnecting power to the resistor?

I will also check AFM flapper as Terry mentioned in this post.

ray,
only the csi sprays into the plenum/TB. not the main injectors.

the csi can be pulled gently out of the plenum after removing the two bolts. back it out just enough so the tip is visible. then have an accomplice start the engine. you will be able to see whether fuel is spraying (good) or dribbling/nothing (bad).

Oh, that's right! (equivalent to people using lighter fluid on their carbed engines?) Thanks a lot, Wally. I'll try that.
I also found your posts on fuel pump, etc here.
I like the idea of installing a fuel pressure gage like you did here. Good way to tell the health of the fuel pump. What system/kit ended up working for you? Do you think it is something robust enough to handle vibration and extreme temps and OK leave there during normal operation?

Hi Yota Bros and Sis',
My hard-starts turned out to occur also when water temp reads normal operating temps so I moved my comments to Jennygirl's thread: "Hard Start With Low Idle Until Warm".
