im looking at buying a 1986 extra cab truck its got the 22rte motor and a auto trans, the trans is bad and needs to be replaced. im thinking a 5spd swap is in order.

now ive heard mixed reviews from ppl on this motor, some people love it and some people say its more troble than its worth.

overall it looks nice in the pics ( i havnt seen it yet)

its still ifs and it has a 4 inch lift and a 2 inch body lift.
35 inch tires and a few other little mods.

what im wanting to know is, is do you guys think it would be worth it to buy and do a tranny swap and use it for a DD/ moderate wheeler?

also im thinking i will prolly go down to a 33 inch tire.

i just picked up a 86 regular cab 22rte truck. paid 700 for it. cab and frame are imaculat. as for the motor not so much. evrything has gone wrong with it if it has to do with the motor. headgasket, fuel pump/filter,TURBOs junk! it has 150,000 on it and it finaly runs, but like ass. my opinion is screw the turbo ones and just go with a 22re truck. soooo much better in my opoinion. thats just me though.

i would go with it, just because you have the option to stick a little money in your rig and make some moderate gains, if you check out the turbo forum they have all the little tips n tricks to convert a diff turbo (cuz the stock one's suck) and lil power adders good luck!

don't overlook standard used vehicle buying criteria.
personally, I am turned off by vehicles that people have already wrenched on.
too many crappy half ass hobby mechanics out there.

need more information.
what's the mileage?
do you have a project budget for fixing it up?
how'd the transmission get trashed?
Toys tend to be flogged a bit as it is. being turbo'd, I'd be inclined to think it's probably taken even more of a beating.
what's the owner like? on the up and up, or is he a jackass?
would you have the opp to have it inspected?
what would be your plan? drive it as is, or rip the turbo and put in something better?
if you've got the funds and time to make it your own, might be a fun project, but otherwise,
$2300 sounds high for a truck that needs a transmission, and it's an automatic on top of that.

both turbo'd trucks i've owned I paid under 1,000 for and one of them was drivable and in fairly decent shape. I still beat it regularly almost 5 years later... If it has a bad trans and it is auto it's definatly not worth anything over that Imop, and if its lifted already with os tires that drops the value even less. 1 either it's been beat offroad or 2. just pushing 35's on a regular basis is hard on a truck because of the extra rolling resistance and weight so it wears out steering, suspension and drivetrain components quicker with the larger tire size... not to mention there's not many good turbos left in a truck that is over 20 years old. It'll probably need swapped out because the ct20's aren't worth the boost they push.... a guy in my area just picked up a 5 speed turbo truck for $500. Runs drives and has a decent frame but the body is shot. He's asking $1500 whish is still way more than I'll give him (especially since I know what he paid for it)... PS I have an auto trans out of an 86 turbo FS. I swapped it in favor of the R151. w/gear driven tcases.

I don't think an 86 auto with a broken tranny, and probably a toasted turbo will worth that much, man with that money u can buy a decent running truck.

ok, well im going to look at it today, if everything besides the tranny is tits then i will prolly buy it, if not then i will pass.

in the ad it say the engine runs great with 150k on it.
in the pics it looks more like a mall crawler than a real wheeler so who knows, ill check it out and report back.

oh and i dont know about you guys but here in CA 2300 for a truck in good shape minus a tranny anit a bad price IMO, but nontheless im offereing 1800 and i prolly wont pay more than 2k for it.

i went and looked at it, its in okay condition but its got its problems.
found moisture under the oil cap but no milky oil, its been sitting and its been raining here so its prolly just condinsation.
he said he will take 2k for it but im leary of it because i cant even move it because the tranny is shot.
im gonna call my uncle tonight and see what he says about it.
over all its got tons of potential, kinda cool because its got power everything and a rear window defroster.
anyone know what gears these came with?

they have 4.10's, ask the guy if the turbo has not been rebuild, my turbo started to pass oil at 160k. disconect the hose at the t/ body, and check for oil marks. good luck.

i doute the kid knows anything about it. hes in highschool and he doesnt seem at all interested in this thing.

my turbo auto had 4.10s, and that's what the VIN plate says it should have.

I wish I would've found you guys before I bought my turbo! I payed way to much for mine and the turbo was shot. After my experience with the 4runner I wish I would have just bought a N/A one that was in awesome shape and put the extra money that I had to put into the turbo, into armor and other useful stuff. I will admit the thing runs pretty good for having just a 4 cylinder in it, but I've dumped so much money into it just to get it to where I dare drive it to work.

yea, Turbo trucks can get expensive, especialy if u want to put alot of new parts on em. Mine had 260,000 miles on it before I spun 2 mains. Luckily I got alot of spare blocks and cranks sitting around, and with a little customizing threw a ct26 off a supra on it. With less than $2,000 in parts for the rebuild, including alot of upgrades, it's good to go even on the long trips. I'd trust my 86 rat TuRD on 38's w/275,000 miles more than I trust my old 01 heep wrangler on 35's that had less than 55,000 miles. Purchased the Heep new and had ~$10,000 in aftermarket parts and upgrades and it was still a pos. the Rat TuRD I'm guessing has less than $6,000 total invested including the price of the truck and the toyota driveline that I will probably have the rest of my wheeling days. 22 rte to R151 to dual cases. Hard to beat that combo.
