Unhappy Yn60 85 4runner diff gears - plz help

Hi, I have a 4 Cyl 3Y '85 4runner solid front diff, I have recently found out that the rear diff is just about had it, unsure on what ratio it is but my placard plate say's it has a G142 which I've found a site that say's a G142 means it's a 4.88 ratio diff but I'm unsure so just wondering if the rear diff ratio has to be the same as the front ratio.

Any help would be appreciated!!

As far as I know the G142 is a 4.88 As well as G144. The G142 is a 2 pinion and the G144 is a 4 pinion. I`m a little suprised you have an 85 with a G142 code. To my knowledge ONLY 92 to 95 automatic 4runners came with 4.88`s, I`m not 100% on that though.

yer well in the trans/axle code its g52 g142 and it a 3y with solid front diff and a 5 speed when i read one off those sites u gave me before to my memory said something like that and thats first one says that the centre diff housing has 3 ribs mine if im looking properly have a big flat bit at top and bottom and 2 ribs each side this is why im stumped only thing i can think off is that the whole rear end is out of something else
cause at the same time ive realized that where the hand brake cables go across into the diff they jam up againts the leaf springs and not letting it work properly
