Hey guys just picked up a 1985 sr5 4x4 22re efi. Wasnt getting any power to the fuel pump found out the circuit opening relay was bad, replaced it and have fire to the pump when the engine is spinning. Well it still won't start, I still have ignition fire but I took the fuel line off the rear of the throttle body and spin the motor but no fuel coming out. If I run a wire from battery to fuel pump connector pump does come on. I did have the tank drained before hand then put fresh gas in. May have had a little old fuel left. Any help is appreciated!!

 

Sound like you might have a plug in the line.

 

No blockage I can blow through it

 

Ok if there no blockage. And you have jumped the fuel pump. Can you hear it click on when you jump it. Might need a friend to climb under the truck to hear it when you jump it. If it is coming on and not pushing fuel. The only two things I can think of is its a bad pump or if it was just replaced (can't remember sorry). It might be backwards. Is that even possible? I am sure people will jump in with more experience.

Edit: reread the first post. When you drained the tank did you clean it as well? Did you clean the fuel strainer. Sometimes those can get clogged. Have you put a new fuel filter on? Is the old one plugged? Is the new one backwards?

Did not clean tank I was told it had non ethanol in it and it looked clean inside, replaced the strainer and fuel filter but not the pump itself but it does run when the engine turns. Everything is on right but still will only run for just a second and then I smell gas (old gas).

 

Check installation instructions for fuel pump wiring (colors, +/- DC) to make sure DC voltage is traveling in right direction. Check pump pressure when wiring orientation is properly installed as you have an RE. If pump is rotating in proper direction and you have abnormally low fuel pressure, you need a new pump. Just to be sure, will the engine run on starter fluid? It's an '85, no telling what some dude has done to it in the last 30 years.

 

With the jumper in below will it run.

Here is how you do a Fuel Pump Bypass on the 85/86.
Jumper wire the Yellow Plug on Drivers side. ( Jumper wire should be in both contacts for testing, I just didn't have it in for picture purposes and mostly a reference for me at a later time.)

 

I would get the old gas out of the tank. There is a plug on the bottom of the tank. I would NOT use it. The few times I have, the corrosion on the plug strips the threads out of the tank and you will have a leak. Make sure you have all your air hoses hooked up, especially your AFM. That will cause it to start and then die if not hooked up.

 

Tried the jumper, still the same thing. All hoses are correct. Would timing have anything to do with it? If I put it at tdc on the crank and take the valve cover off the mark on the cam sprocket is at about 10 oclock position but the silver link on the timing chain is at about 4 oclock

 

The silver link I believe will move as the engine revolves over time. But not sure about the cam dowel. Is it possible the the crank pulley as slipped. I think I have heard about this happening. Any ways good luck

 

The crank and camshaft should be at 12 oclock when at TDC. If it is at 10 oclock something isn't right. On the camshaft, the silver link and I think you can see the dot ground into the sprocket should be at 12. As it sounds now, something is way out of time. If it has slipped that bad, I would suspect chain or something is needing repaired/replaced.
