What engine is this?
Hey guys,
I just bought my self a 1985 4Runner and the thing is freaking awesome but right now im having diffeculty trying to figure out what parts are on it. The previous owner did a few modifications upgrading the brakes, V6 rear carrier and dual trans. The question that I have is with the oil pan. He said that he had the engine rebuilt 10K ago and the engine runs fine besides a oil leak, but there is a large dent on the pan cause by maybe a jump and the axle hitting the pan. I'm thinking the dent is causing the leak but why would the axle hit the oil pan? I ordered a new 1985 4Runner oil pan from the dealer ship and when I receved it was completely different. The lower hump was in front instead of the back side of the pan. The dealer double check the pan # and everything so im wondering if the motor has been swapped out with a different one. From what I can tell it's definitly a 22Re and the tag on the vehical says 22R-EC 2366cc JT4RNGIDXF5090220 Model RN60LV-MDEA. Here are some pictures of the oil pan. Is this a different engine, is it suppose to be like that and the dealer is giving me crap about the pan or what?
Thanks,
Kevin

The 20R and 22R/RE have the same oil pan, but they are 4WD and 2WD specific!! The 2WD oilpan has the hump closer to the front/middle. Make sure that if you have a 4x4 you reorder a 4x4 pan. That's what it sounds like happened here, you got yourself a 2WD pan for the 22R engine.

I think the prevous owner swapped out the front springs for the rear springs and put chevys in to the rear. Could this have re located the front axle causing the axle to hit the oil pan?
Thanks,
Kevin

2wd
The sump on the middle is for Celica's. The sump for the 2WD is in the rear
like the one you got. If you need the correct one let me know. I have the pickup also. I have seen several smashed 2WD pans from the solid axles.

Ok guys,
Over the weekend I took the pan to a toyota dealer and the told me that the pan design has changed. My oil pan is like one from a 1984 toyota pick up with two steps and no skid plate. If I wanted to change it to a 1985 4Runner pan then I would have to get a "kit" to convert it over. I guess the "kit" has all the parts for a new pick line and everything. I think im just going to put some bigger bump stops under there to solve the problem.
Thanks for the help,
Kevin
