If it is the 85 motor it will. 84 and older wont. Make sure it is the right year. If he is going to use it for a 4 Wheel Drive, he will need to change oil pan and pick up tube. Will need to remove the cam that drives the mechanical pump and install a block off plate where the mechanical pump was. Change distributors, there might be some other things that I may have missed but the block and heads will interchange.

If you go to the 22RE Performance web page he has a pretty good section on identifying what is what.
If you look there you will see a change in manifold stud count and a boss cast in the side of the block where the could drill an oil line fitting for turbo.
You and your buddy look it over.
I might be wrong, but I believe the EFI cam grind is different than the carb cam grind. It could influence emissions

It's a 85 motor but the guys dad says you have to drill for the Knox sensor he said that was the only thing he was worried about

If it is indeed still the original engine things should be good to go.

Then with Toyota`s you never know.

The knock sensor should be the only issue besides what Terry mentioned

If you are drilling a Knock Sensor hole, you have an 84 block. It also wont have the bolt holes for the Fuel Filter. I had heard that you could Fuel Inject an 84 motor. The 84 motor that you might be able to is the 84 Celica as it was fuel injected. I have not seen one so dont know on the Celica. With enough machine work you might could fuel inject an 84 or older block but dont feel it would be worth it. Here is some differences in the blocks, https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post51960488

Besides what I have mentioned about the Fuel Filter and Knock Sensor, look at how the bolt holes are almost all exactly oppisite of each other on the Intake Manifolds. The Timing Chain covers are different and using a newer head to add the fuel injection is probably not possible but I could be wrong on that.

Both engines appear to be the same height. But for example the 84 will have a taller block and a shorter head and the 85 will have the shorter block and taller head or it may be vice versa.

I did forget about the Knock Sensor like wyoming mentioned. You could always mount the Knock Sensor and maybe bypass it from being in the block and mount the Fuel Filter elsewhere but still dealing with Intakes. It might be possible but with the machine work needed I feel it would add up quick plus the research to make everything work.

Here is a intake manifold that I used for my 86 Runner and something wasnt right on it and had to use another. The first stud up by the fuel pump lines up but nearly all of the rest dont as you get furhter to the back of the motor.

Old and New Style Block Differences.
I got my Timing Chain on and had to replace the Timing Cover due to it being worn. I tried to use a early model 22r and they wont interchange. Thought I would put some info up to help others identify what they may have.

84 and older. 22r has no dimples/circles and the number "2" on it. Twistedyota got it right on the height thing, see the last picture for a good example. I also tried to mark which bolt holes for removing the timing cover on down the road when I have to do a chain again. Hope it wont burn off but it if does I tried to come up with an easier way. Never can remember which bolts they are.

22re has "6k" and dimples/circles. 85 and up.

Here is what I am talking about on the 1/8th inch height. I used a lockwasher to help show how much of a difference. This cover is 22r. Seems like the oil pump bolts were to short. Hope this will save some one some trouble. It is an early model 22r timing cover on a newer 22re block.

Something about the AC bracket too! But I forget, I've got an 85 carb and a 93 RE and the bracket mounts are slightly different. Then there is the valve cover issue, but he can always change that.

Valve covers get swapped around. Exhaust valves have round or pear shaped and require you to pull the exhaust manifold. Aftermarket timing chain cover may not have all of the above markings on them. For me, the quickest way to identify which motor it is 84 an older, has no Knock Sensor or Fuel Filter mounting studs. 85 and newer has Knock Sensor and Fuel Filter studs. 2 wheel or 4 wheel is where the sump is mounted and size on oil pan.
