Running gear fluid changes (quantity, type and labor)

Hello,

I got my 85 4runner not long ago and have no idea on the maint. hist. on it so i'm just doing everything on it like it hasn't been touched in 10yrs.

On my list now is changing out the both diff fluid, tranny and transfer case.

My questions are:

1. What type of oil for each?
2. Qantity for each
3. and, procedure... i imagine drive till warm, drain (4 drain plugs right?), then make some type of hose device and fill till i can feel it with finger or see it drain out out the fill.

Did i miss anything? Dealer wanted $260 plus tax and i think i should be able to buy the fluid for around $50 and take less then 2hrs doing it.

Thanks for help and suggestions, peter

(i know my owners manual prolly tells me what type and quantity but I wanted some updated info based on experience).

Exactly it takes less than that. you drain, plug, fill. I think if you have an auto its different but i don't know.

Easy enough to do it yourself, remove the fill plug, then drain plug, then drain plug, replace and refill:

Be careful with your drain and fill bolts. They are easy to round off if they are really tight.

Yep, always remove the fill plug first. Dont want to drain it out then find that you cant get the fill plug out!

good tips guys.....well, turns out the oil in the transfer case looked good, and in the rear diff too but front diff had "mud" in it and was low, and tranny had dirty oil in it as well so replaced those two. again, thanks for the help.

x2. If you can't refill it because you can't get the fill plug out..... well, it's just not a good situation that could have been avoided.

So you don't rip the drain plug from the axle. It serves as a mini guard. I actually removed both the drain plug and guard and have a smooth bottom. Now I have to loosen the diff nuts at the bottom to drain it.
