there are a couple of recent threads about carb issues and the most common problem is the aap (aux accelerator pump) it seems the diaphram goes bad and dumps fuel all the time I will see if I can spot the thread

I am not sure I have the same problem in the mornings.
last night I put a shop rag over the left hand side and it started right up I also have no high idle which I am still trying to get in order.
so I believe I have a choke issue.

hard start cold and no high idle is more like choke settings but may have a minor shared symptom

Mine seems to be running rich too, it backfires constantly, not loud, but you can tell there is unburnt fuel in the exhaust. Also has anyone ever had trouble with their 22R not idling after driving fast on the freeway? happens to me everytime.

Hi,

I have an 84 SR5 Long bed that had the same problem, I couldn't get it to pass emissions. I put a new carb on, still ran rich. It ends up most of the carb rebuilders rebuild for performance, not economy or emissions. I went to toyota and bought new original factory specs jets, cost $8.00. The main offender was the jet in the side wall of the carb bowl. Seeing as how the parts were quite inexpensive I also replaced the jet at the bottom of the pin that moves with the linkage. I was able to see the difference in the diameter of the holes when I held them up to the light. This solved my problem, and I passed the emissions test with flying colors.

I have a 1986 22r in my truck and it runs super rich and rough and skips when accelerating when cold. It also skips when accelerating and when you let off the gas it whines super loud and slows way down, but it runs perfect when warm. What the eff? Has anyone ever had this problem? Oh, and when its cold, my idle is below 1000 rpms and my carb adjustments are all unresponsive, even the air fuel mix. But once again, when its warm it idles at 1500 and the adjustments are immediate. I need help

Sounds like that carb needs some TLC.... Remove it, dis assemble it, soak it, put it back together and run it.... Easy as pie. But I have done a couple hundred FJ40/60 carbs, loads of Quadratoilets, countless Holleys, and a bunch of Webers, even some Predators and Carters...

Next is my Mini Cruiser carb on my 22R...

I just replaced ALL the vacuum hoses and its still not idling right and skipping and rough at idle. Do I just need a whole carb replacement? I don't wan to spend the money on a rebuild kit and have it not work.

You can replace the carb, that it always an option. A lot of folks do the Weber swap cause they're cheaper to repair and rebuild. And there can be some performance advantages. Tho I am a fan of the Aisins.

I would MAKE SURE that ALL your vacuum lines are routed properly, EGR doing its job at the right times, and go from there. IMO its cheaper to rebuild the carb if you do it yourself, and your only out 30-50 bux for a kit. Rarely have I seen a rebuild, done properly, not fix runability problems... But a new carb also fixes issues, providing that everything else is working properly.

Good Luck!!
