quick tcase question

It normal for the tcase to grind a bit going from neutral to 4low with the clutch in and the tranny in neutral? Its not difficult to put into 4low it just has a lil gear grinding you can feel in the stick

You're not supposed to shift into 4L while the vehicle is in motion.

My truck does it. It does it more if u push the clutch in real fast then shift to 4lo, because the gears inside the trans are still turning for a second.

Well that makes sense but the tranny was in neutral from the time it was started until I shifted it down into 4low so shouldn't any spinning have stopped before the tcase? I don't know much about the innerworkings of a transmission/transfer case so that maybe a kinda stupid question

Edit: I'm also haveing trouble putting the tranny into random gears while at a stop but I haven't noticed and problems while I had it moving

Yea the trans still spins even with it in neutral. If you have ever ran your truck while the rear axle was on jack stands the tires spin, even in neutral. I've even heard of trucks in very cold weather that will slowly move forward with the engine running and the trans in neutral due to the fluid being so thick.

If you engage the hubs, and drive a few feet before putting it into 4Lo, you won't have this problem.

However, its normal. All of my 4Runners do it if my hubs aren't in

My truck does it if the hubs are locked in or not. It shouldn't matter though if they are locked as long as the vehicle is completely stopped. Once you shift into 4 high the front driveline is connected to the rear even with the transfer case in neutral, in the toyota's I've been around.
